“Best I love September’s yellow,
morns of dew-strung gossamer,
Thoughtful days without a stir,
Rooky glamours, brazen leaves,
Stubble dotted obr with sheaves –
More than Spring’s bright uncontrol
Suit the Autumn of my soul.”
-from The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady by Edith Holden
We set off to the Pedernales Falls State Park today and enjoyed the slightly cooler temps. I can’t believe I hadn’t been here before after living in Austin for so long but I guess sometimes that happens. There weren’t a lot of visitors so at times we felt like we were the only ones there.
We did a lot of walking and caught sight of butterflies, lizards and even a fox. He was a bit too quick for my camera but it made my day. One thing I would love to get are some binoculars for our upcoming hikes. I think it would be great to have to have a pair of binoculars and hopefully learn more about the birds and other animals around. I know some of you enjoy nature and birdwatching and if you have some recommendations for binoculars please let me know.
This was a wonderful way to welcome the fall season. I’m looking forward to cooler temperatures and getting back outdoors. What are you excited about?
I waited for a long time to buy a good pair of binoculars. I bought a pair recommended by our birding instructor in the naturalist group I’m in. They are called Nikon Aculon and they cost about $100.
I’ve used them a lot during the pandemic.
What a beautiful place, and how lucky there weren’t many other people around. I love it when it feels like you’re all alone with nature.
Deb Nance at Readerbuzz – Thank you so much for the recommendation! I’ll definitely look into those and hopefully get some for more outdoor outings this fall. I think it will make our hikes that much more enjoyable to learn more about the wildlife that lives in those areas!
Lark – It’s wonderful isn’t it? I even did a bit of meditation at one point and it really made the day even more special.
Sigh. Fall season is so very lovely, and those opening lines attest to that! It reminds me of this song “Try to Remember” by The Brothers Four. I had really forgotten that one, so thanks to you I am off to listen to it all over again!
After your mention of The Sixth Extinction, I immediately got the e-book. I was thoroughly enjoying all the history and the ease of reading and understanding. This morning, I arrived at the Anthropocene epoch, and it is discouraging. I won’t be able to read as quickly; I’ll have to put it down and give it a rest. I’m on the acidic ocean portion, and I’m sad about the loss of the marine animals because of the change in Ph. Anyway, I’m glad you reminded me, and I’m glad I followed through and got a copy. This is one that I will probably get a physical book when I finish.
I’m excited about the cooler temperatures, too! Fall is an energizing month, especially after this hot and humid summer.
Lex @ Lexlingua – I’d never heard the song but thanks to YouTube I found the recording. Oh my that is so sweet and cozy. I’ll have to check out more of their songs.
Jenclair – It took me a long time to finish the book but so worthwhile. I thought some parts were easier to get through than others but I loved her enthusiasm and could appreciate all that she went through to complete her research. I can’t wait to hear what your thoughts will be after you finish it. I think she may have a new book coming out too! And, yes, isn’t it wonderful to finally have some respite from the heat! I’m so excited that we can actually open our windows in the morning! 🙂
It’s great you were able to get out & about into nature there. Looks pretty. Fall is the perfect time to do such things.
Susan – Fall is the perfect time to be out in nature right? So interesting to see how things are changing and just good to get away from the every day things.
