I hope everyone had a great weekend. Ours was very nice as we got to spend quite a bit of time at the bookstore checking out magazines and books. Unfortunately, I found out that Simple Scrapbooks and Ascent, which are two publications I check out occasionally, are folding. That’s such a bummer. I know there are other magazines that publish similar content but still it’s always nice to have more variety but I guess that’s just the sign of the times.
Anyway the rest of the weekend was pretty much spent away from the computer and at my work table. I did quite a bit of bookbinding so I’ll be adding more postcard journals in the shop and another new little book structure to add but more on that later.
Speaking of handmade books, while I was at the bookstore I found a new book on artist books, Book & Art: Handcrafting Artists’ Books by Dorothy Simpson Krause. There were a couple of techniques in this book that I’d like to try my hand at one of these days, like gelatin monoprints and drumleaf binding so I’ll be adding this book to my library of books on bookbinding. You can also check out the writer’s site to see some examples of her beautiful books.
Other than that, I’m still reading the books from my current stack. I hope to finish the P.D. James book soon as that’s for my mystery book group discussion coming up this week. Oh and speaking of book discussions, Danielle has come up with some wonderful selections for the next Slaves of Golconda read. Check ’em out and hope you’ll think about joining us.
Alright off to read!
It is sad to see the loss of so many publications. I hope you can find some of the content online.
I’m so impressed with your bookbinding skills. I need to take a class…I think I’d like it! I really liked The Lighthouse (that is what you’re reading right? Either that or my memory is failing me). It will be fun to see what your group thinks!
I just ordered myself another journal! They are just too tempting!
Seems like several magazines have folded recently. Curious about how they’ll do in the long run between further digitization and the shrinking economy.
sounds like a nice productive weekend. Sorry to hear about your favorite magazines. I hate when that happens and it seems to be happening more and more these days.
I hate to see so many magazines and newspapers closing up shop.
It’s so sad to see some of our favourite publications have folded their business, isn’t it? 🙁
Yay to your bookbinding projects! I can’t wait to see your finished works! 😀
Simple Scrapbooks was actually one of the only magazines I still enjoyed…that’s too bad!!!
Amy – I know it’s a bummer isn’t it? The good thing about Simple Scrapbooks at least is that it falls under the umbrella of Creative Scrapbooks magazine so at least they’ll have some of the content covered!
Sandy – I love bookbinding and definitely encourage you to give it a try. You can pick up lots of books on it but of course a class is always the best way to go. It’s so much fun and addictive 🙂 Yes, it is The Lighthouse we are reading. Very good. I think I know “whodidit” but we’ll see 🙂
jenclair – You made my day! Thank you bunches 🙂
Tiffany – I know, it’s like a new one closes shop every month. Like with books I think having digital access to stuff is great but nothing beats having the actual book or magazine in hand!
Serena – It was fun and a bit tiring so that’s why I still haven’t gotten around to all of my blog reading! haha..
Diane – It’s just a shame isn’t it? I wish they could survive but I get the feeling more will be lost before the economy recovers.
Melody – It is. I have already lost several “favorites”. I swear if my most favorites fold I will cry! I’ve been having fun bookbinding 🙂
Staci – I think the editors have a blog now where they plan to post a lot of content. And, apparently some of the content will now fall under their Creative Keepsakes magazine. I’ll be checking on that to see how it goes.
Scrapbooking has been so popular that I wonder if there are too many publications out there now and readers are just too inundated with choices! I wish there were more needlework magazines–the one I like isn’t sold on the newsstand, so I rarely get it these days. Your weekend sounds wonderful!
Danielle – Maybe that’s what happened. Especially with the economy I guess there were just too many magazines covering the same subject so readers started cutting back on one or two and so some are folding. It was a great weekend. Now if I could just get all that motivation going for this week – haha…
