I thought I was going to have some family in town this weekend but it turns out they’ll come visit another time. So, this means free time to spend with the books. Which is a good thing as I’ve started several books recently. Let me tell you about about them.
The first one I started was Maggie Again by John D. Husband. I’ve had this ARC waiting for me for a while and am so glad to finally get to it. The story of four teenagers is charming and so far I’m enjoying the characters and their antics.
Next up is Life Studies by Susan Vreeland. I have only read two of the short stories in this collection but so far so good, and I also found out that on her web site you can see which painting she is referring to for each story. I like that.
Another ARC I’ve started is Forgive Me by Amanda Eyre Ward. I’ve heard some mixed reviews about this book and I think I can see why. I like the premise, a globe-trotting reporter always on the hunt for the best story, but she’s not a very likable character. I’ll let you know.
Finally, I always have to have a mystery in the bunch and I started The Shape of Water by Andrea Camilleri. This book is proof that sometimes it’s just the right book, wrong time. I had started this long ago and didn’t like it. As a matter of fact, I gave it away to a friend. She said it was a great little mystery and gave me back the book. As I trust her judgement, I decided to put it back on my stacks where it lingered for a while longer until I picked it up to read for the First in a Series challenge and what do you know? I’m thoroughly enjoying it.
So those are my weekend reads. Maybe I’ll even throw in another book. I hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with lots of good stories.
Life Studies sounds amazing. I may just have to buyt that one.
buy even…without the t
🙁
Life Studies sounds interesting. That’s so true that mood and timing can affect how much we like a book, or not, and that it’s sometimes worth giving a book another chance. Enjoy your weekend of reading.
Wow that’s a lot of books to read at the same time… I can only cope with one! I’ve just picked up Anita Shreve’s latest paperback so I’ll be getting stuck into that this weekend.
Megan – The first story I really liked and felt like it was very “complete”. I’ll keep you posted on how the reading goes!
Tanabata – I definitely agree. The weekend reading is going great so far. Hope yours is too!
Mrs S – I typically do have two or three going on but try to keep it at that. Otherwise I may start getting plots and characters confused – ha,ha.. Anita Shreve is an author I haven’t read in a long time. I should re-visit her. Hope you are enjoying your reading!
I read Forgive Me last month – I had mixed feelings about it. I never quite connected with the main character as much as I hoped. I’ll be interested to hear your opinion.
So far so good. My weekend that is. I’m just vegging, chilling with my laptop, TV, magazine and iTunes – yes I’m a multi-tasking fool. 😛
I’m still on Special Topics in Calamity Physics – rather Donna Tart-ish but quite good, so far. I don’t dare start another book till this is nearly done.
I’m glad you’re enjoying Camilleri. I love his Montalbano books, and I’m especially happy that I can read them in the original sicilian-italian. So funny!I’m also a fan of the tv series they made. But unfortunately the dvds dont have english subtitles…One of my favourites is “the voice of the violin”.
ravenous reader – I was really disappointed with the main character too. I thought the story was great but she bugged me! I need to do a proper post on it.
Kisane – Sounds like a great weekend! 🙂 I really want to read Special Topics -that’s a big chunky book isn’t it?
Valentina – Oh lucky you! I would love to be able to read Italian. I can’t wait to read the second one. I so wish the DVDs were available here.
I have an ARC of the Ward book, too. I really need to get moving on it. I’ve heard mixed things as well. I’d also like to read Life Studies by Vreeland–it’s on my TBR pile anyway.
Danielle – Life Studies is really good. It’s just one of those nice, easy to get into books. The Ward book I was disappointed with and I just feel like it could have been so good. Maybe you’ll enjoy it and it is very readable.
