I can’t believe I almost forgot that today was National Booklover’s Day! Did you? Anyone buy any books to celebrate? I didn’t do any book shopping this weekend but I am in the middle of four great reads so I thought I’d tell you about those.
First off yes, I’m still reading Devotions by Mary Oliver. I am reading this one in small doses because I feel like I may miss something if I go too quickly. So it may take me quite a bit more time but it’s well worth it. I think I mentioned before that the only thing I regret is that I have a Kindle version and would much prefer to have an actual copy.
My other read is The Club Dumas by Arturo Pรยฉrez-Reverte translated by Sonia Soto. Lucas Corso is a book detective, hired to hunt down rare editions for wealthy and unscrupulous clients. What will prove to be his most challenging case is authenticating a manuscript by Alexandre Dumas. This book is a bit slow going but it’s really a fun adventure and I feel like I need to re-read The Three Musketeers or something else by Dumas. This also happens to be one of my reads for Spanish Literature Month.
I also started reading Hurricane Season by Fernanda Melchor and translated by Sophie Hughes which could also count for Spanish Literatureรย and Women in Translation Month. Although there are not many paragraph breaks and dialogue marks, I don’t have an issue keeping up with the story. What does give me pause is the violence and misery that surrounds the villagers in this small Mexican town where there doesn’t seem to be much hope for better things. That said, I have no idea where the story is going and I can’t wait to see what develops.
Finally for my mystery I picked up, A Killer In King’s Cove by Iona Whishaw. WWII has ended and Lane Winslow leaves London for change of pace and moves to British Columbia to a small town where she’ll be surrounded by an eclectic mix of characters. I just started it last night so a bit too soon to tell but I hope it will be good. I’m discussing this one with my Mystery Book Group next week.
Let me know if you’ve read any of these and what you thought. Also, thank you so much for your comments in my previous post. I’ve really enjoyed reading about what brings you joy and we’ll have to continue to share with each other to keep us going through these crazy times. Hope you all have a great start of the week!
I don’t think I knew that it was Book Lovers day. I certainly neglected to celebrate it.
I didn’t know it was Book Lovers Day either. Though I need no incentive to buy books for myself. I’ve kind of overdone it a little through these months, but I keep telling myself that we’re not vacationing so it’s all good, right? Ha! I’m happy to hear about the book your mystery group is reading and it’s an author and series that I’ve never heard of. I took a look and decided to ‘celebrate’ by picking up the first book to read at some point. I’ll look forward to hearing how you liked it as well. I love the British Columbia setting. Have a good week, Iliana!
I didn’t realize it was Book Lovers Day, but I just ordered a new audiobook (not that I really need anymore since I have dozens yet to listen to), so that’s my belated treat!
I love Mary Oliver and should buy a bunch of her books. I usually check them out from the library, but it would be nice to have them on hand when I want a little inspiration.
Hope you have a nice week, Iliana. Is it still blistering hot?
I completely forgot about National Booklover’s Day. I did not buy any books either. I did get in a little reading, although not as much as I might have liked. I am glad you are enjoying The Club Dumas. Hurricane Season also sounds good. I haven’t read any of your current reads, I’m afraid. I wish the reading bug would bite me a little harder. I had hoped to get in some good reading time with school starting for my daughter today and it being my day off work, but it didn’t work out that way. I hope you have a great week, Iliana.
Of course, I missed National Booklover’s Day. Probably busy reading. ๐
Marg – The way I see it, it’s never too late ๐
Kay – I know right? I feel like I’ve bought more books lately too but I figure we are saving tons on our yearly trip so there you go. I hope you enjoy the Lane Winslow series. So far I’m really liking it. B.C. is such a beautiful area that it certainly makes me want to go visit again.
Les in OR – Hurrah for a book treat! That’s what i say, I need to have them around so I can page through them looking for the one poem that I need at that moment. That’s why that is probably going to be the last Kindle poetry book I buy. And, yes, unfortunately it’s super hot. We’re in the 100s and I’m over it! ๐
Literary Feline – I blame it on the pandemic. Certainly there were a couple of months there were I felt like I could barely read. you’ve got a lot going on especially with Mouse’s first week of school but hoping it all works out well!
Jen Mullen – Well, you were celebrating in your own way ๐
