Well, guys, no German bread. We didn’t have one ingredient and so the baking had to be put off. It was a bit of a bummer but other than that our weekend was quite nice and get this, I was at the bookstore every day. We went Friday night, Saturday after yoga class, and Sunday after lunch. Now, that’s my kind of weekend.
I caught up on a lot of reading and I treated myself to Don’t Look Now by Daphne Du Maurier. I think the only bad thing about spending a lot of time at the bookstore this weekend is that I added a lot of books to my wish list. I left my notebook in the car though and I’m being lazy right now so you’ll have to wait for that report until tomorrow.
But, I did want to tell you about the books I checked out from the library. Here’s what I got:
- Murder on Lexington Avenue by Victoria Thompson. This series has been one I’ve liked for the setting and the characters although with the past few books I’ve become a bit annoyed with the fact that the main characters’ relationship (there’s a bit of a romance) seems to have stalled. It’s not that I want my mysteries to have a romance element to them but if you’ve already set that up then you have to follow through don’t you think? Anyway, I started and finished the book this weekend hoping to see some progress made and while I liked it better than the previous book I was still a bit disappointed.
- The Last Child by John Hart. This one I’ll wait to read in a couple of weeks as it’s for book group and I don’t want to get too ahead.
- A Thousand Sisters: My Journey Into the Worst Place to be a Woman by Lisa Shannon. I saw this book reviewed in Bitch Magazine and it sounds like it will be a difficult read but I think an important read.
I need to catch up with my blog reading this week and see what you guys have been up to. Now, I’m off to bed with a new book. Not sure which one though so I need to go stand in front of the bookshelves for a while.
What? No German bread? Aww… still your weekend sounds wonderful to me! 😀
Bummer that you didn’t get to make the German bread but it sounds like you had a lot of fun at the bookstore!
It sounds like you had a fun weekend. How’s that Texas heat? We’re on vacation in Virginia Beach and it’s been miserably hot and humid. 99 yesterday, but the heat index was 108. We pretty much lived in the water (at the beach and pool),
You’re in for a treat with Don’t Look Now. I read it almost four years ago and some of the stories have stuck with me, which is unusual since I don’t typically remember short stories. I gave the book a 8/10 rating. Enjoy!
A weekend full of bookshop visits. That is my kind of weekend.
Too bad about the German bread. But everyday at the bookstore sounds pretty good! 🙂
Books will always make you feel better about no German bread! I have The Last Child on my shelves, and I’d REALLY like to get to it soon. We’ll see…
Great books hun, I love both the bookstore and the library. About standing in front of your bookshelves for a while…lol…I do the same thing 🙂
Just came home from Border’s and happened on this post! Although my work’s not in a bookstore, I am feeling more and more urgent about the fact that we should support them. Hard to imagine a world where they don’t exist….
Whoa! That is a very bookful weekend. I would love that!
What better than a book weekend? enjoy your new additions.
Melody – The horror right? 🙂 We are baking the bread tonight. It’s getting late but I guess I’ll have to stay up to taste a bit!
Kathleen – We did. I think people might have thought I was working there when I started organizing some of the magazines. haha.
les in NE – That’s another reason why we stayed in a lot. The heat just wears me out and then we’ve had humidity and blah. It’s just too much. Granted, I don’t complain about Texas weather usually when winter comes along but summers are just too much for me now.I’m really excited about the du Maurier book!
vivienne – I know right? I wanted to go to the used bookstore as well but didn’t quite get to go. Maybe next weekend 🙂
Stefanie – The yoga studio where I go for class is practically next to Borders. Isn’t that great? Yoga and then relaxing with books. Seriously, bliss!
Sandy – Thank goodness for the power of books right. They always bring a smile to my face!
bookworm – ha,ha.. I figured some of you would relate to that 🙂
Shelley – I totally agree. Plus, when it comes to Borders I keep hearing that they aren’t doing so well and may go under. I seriously hope not. It’s sad to see any bookstore closing.
andi – It was fun!
diane – I haven’t started the du Maurier yet but may have to peek in soon!
I loved Don’t Look Now–that’s a great collection! I’d like to read Last Child, too. It sounds like you had a great weekend!
Danielle – I remember when you reviewed it! I thought that is definitely going on my list. When I saw this book at Borders I couldn’t pass it up. Plus, isn’t the NYRB edition great? I love the way those books look 🙂
