As I mentioned in my last post, we have a new Half Price Books in town and it’s close to my home so that was my big to-do for the weekend. Go check it out!
It was very bright and well-organized and I was happy to see a good mystery section. I wandered around looking through the craft books, fiction, poetry and the clearance section.
I was hoping to find a book by Banana Yoshimoto for the Japanese Reading challenge but no luck. Then I thought maybe I’ll find a mystery by Peter James and again no luck but friends, I found two really great books.
First, Horoscopes for the Dead by Billy Collins. I’ve raved about his poetry before so I’m very happy to add this book to my collection. And, guess what? The book is even a signed copy! I promise to report back on this book after I’ve had a chance to spend some time with it.
My other find, was The Mammoth Book of Best British Mysteries. Danielle recently wrote about a short story from this collection and I was all excited when I saw this. Of course when I got it home and looked through the book I realized this wasn’t exactly the one she mentioned. I forgot that there are several mammoth books of Best British Mysteries. Still I love mysteries and a foreign setting so I still think this was a find. Actually, now I think it’d be pretty cool to have the whole series which I believe is up to 10 books. I guess I have more book hunting to do.
So that was my excitement for the weekend. How about you? Did you go to any bookstores? What did you get?
I love visits to the book store. It sounds like you got some cool finds. Good luck with hunting for the rest of the mystery series!
I didn’t go to any bookshops lately, I’m trying to ban myself from buying any new books for a few months at least.
I read Horoscopes for the Dead by Billy Collins and loved it, though more than the critics. I hope you enjoy this new bookstore for many more years.
I sooo want to read Horoscopes for the Dead! Can’t wait to find out what you think of it. And I’m currently trying to hunt down a copy of Kitchen, by Banana Yoshimoto. It was mentioned in my latest read–Anna and the French Kiss–and now I have to read it.
I always have a hard time visiting bookstores since I work in one and have far too many unread books in my house. With that said, though, I plan to visit Half Price Books in a couple of weeks. We don’t have one here in Lincoln, but there’s one in Omaha and I’ll be up there to pick up our granddaughter at the airport. I have a couple of boxes of books to sell to HPBs, but I’m sure I’ll walk out with a few new ones. Hard to resist their deals!
We love out HPB!
Bookworm – I love the new HPB store! We typically go to the bookstore every week so I do have to be a bit careful but I have placed a restriction on my library borrowing. I need to read some of my books now!
Serena – I also remember reading some not great reviews of the book but I think I’ll enjoy it. His poetry is just so accessible.
Andi@Estella’s Revenge – You and me both are on the hunt! I think she’d be the perfect read for the Japanese Lit challenge but I may have to go with another author.
Les in NE – I can imagine you’d probably just want to go relax with your books! And, yes, so hard to resist those HPB deals. One of the HPBs here always has one of the best clearance sections I’ve seen!
Tiffany – Yay! Another HPB love!
What fun to have a new HPB open nearby. To bad you didn’t find the books you were looking for but it sounds like you found other good ones instead.
Lucky you–both to have a new (used) bookstore and to find one of those Mammoth books–even if it is not the same one I was reading from I am sure it has lots of good stories to choose from. I plan on looking for some next time I at at my own favorite used bookstore. They have a Mammoth book of ghost stories that is also really good that I have read from in the past.
