I said I wasn’t going to put together a list for the Summer Mystery challenge but I will list some of the books I’m considering. Here are some new-to-me authors who I’ve been meaning to read for the longest time.
- To Shield the Queen by Fiona Buckley
- The Shape of Water by Andrea Camilleri
- Thus Was Adonis Murdered by Sarah Caudwell
- The Strange Files of Fremont Jones by Dianne Day
- What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris
- Birdman by Mo Hayder
- What’s a Girl Gotta Do by Sparkle Hayter
- I Dreamed I Married Perry Mason by Susan Kandel
- This Dame for Hire by Sandra Scoppettone
- The Franchise Affair by Josephine Tey
- The Blind Man of Seville by Robert Wilson
- Death of a Red Heroine by Qiu Xiaolong
Those are just some of the titles that I think would be fun to read. I like having the freedom to read at whim so that’s why I’m not chosing a stack ahead of time. Watch, none of these will be the ones that I end up reading. Anyway, I’ll be sure to let you know which books I’m chose as I go along.
Oh and if you’ve read any of these and can recommend them please do so!

Now this is one challenge I could probably do since I already read mysteries! However, I better try and concentrate on finishing the ones I already have started! I have read most of the Dianne Day mysteries–I liked them. I heard she lost her publisher, which is a real pity–hence nothing new in ages. I read the first few Fiona Buckleys ages ago and remember liking them, but I haven’t read anything lately. I read Brat Farrer by Josephine Tey–I’d like to read more. And I have the C.S. Harris book on my stack as well! Have you read anything by Australian Kerry Greenwood–I am reading one now and she’s fun! Have fun with this challenge!
I was at the bookstore and had no clue where to start – the mystery section seemed like a foreign planet to me. But now I see your list, maybe I can steal a couple, hope you won’t mind? 🙂
Not the same Matt as above.:) Maybe I should try out the Mystery challenge as I’ve not read much mystery. Would be a good chance at an introduction.
I have tagged you for the “8 Things” meme. Sorry if you have already been tagged, no pressure to do it either. If you want you can check out the rules on my blog!
I have to tell you that I am loving setting up the SMRC! I am finding lots of authors that I haven’t read and am going to have reading material for years to come. I haven’t read many of the authors on your list on your list, either.
I liked the Fiona Buckley series – lots of interesting historical information. And Josephine Tey is an old friend. Daughter of Time is my favorite. It features a police officer laid up with an injury whose friend gets him interested in Richard III and whether or not he murdered his nephews. He does all the investigating from bed with the help of a research assistant. A very interesting book for anyone with an interest in history.
And Kerry Greenwood is a hoot. So many books…

I’ve only heard of a couple of them. I think this challenge will be fun but very very bad for my wishlist! I’m looking forward to hearing about the ones you read.
I absolutely love Sarah Caudwell. I’d recommend all four of her wonderful mysteries. Dianne Day is a good bet, too; her characters are great. I’ve read all of this series, but hadn’t heard that she lost her publisher. That is depressing – she’s a marvellous writer.
I could do this challenge. I read a lot of mysteries. Looks like you have some good choices. I have not heard of any of them.
Danielle – Oh so good to hear you’ve enjoyed the Dianne Day & Fiona Buckley series. They sound just like my type of thing. I have read one Kerry Greenwood, Cocaine Blues, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Can’t wait to read more in that series. Hope you join in on this challenge. C’mon you can do it 🙂
Matt – I can just picture you wandering around in one of those quaint indie bookstores. Steal away and hope you find some good mysteries to enjoy!
Matt (the other one!) – Hey, thank you for stopping by and for the tag. I will work on that tonight 🙂
Liz – Thank you for organizing the challenge. It’s going to be fun! I have heard so many good things about Josephine Tey’s books.
Tanabata – I know what you mean! Can’t wait to share notes on how the challenge is going.
Melanie – Yay, another vote for Dianne Day. I have a feeling I’ll really like her books. I’ve heard that Sarah Caudwell’s books are a bit more literary type mysteries. Oh goodness, I want to read all of these NOW! 🙂
I’ve enjoyed many of the Fiona Buckley and Dianna Day mysteries — some interesting historic information and quick, fun reads. I haven’t read To Shield the Queen, though, and will look for it. I’ve read What Angels Fear (light, romantic mystery) and Death of a Red Heroine (very interesting if you are interested in the China). I’ve also read A Loyal Character Dancer and When Red Is Black by Qiu Xiaolong; I like this series.
Thus Was Adonis Murdered and Birdman both sound intriguing, so I’ll keep those in mind for the challenge as I’ve never read anything by either author.
Thanks for some good suggestions!
Quite some time ago I read The Singing Sands by Josephine Tey; the more I thought about it, the more I enjoyed it. Eventually I’ll get around to reading more Tey books.
You’ve got several on there that look very interesting! I may have to adjust my list of possibilities to include them!
Our summer is filling up fast, isn’t it!?! ;D
Jenclair – Good to hear that the Xiaolong series is a good one! Are you going to put up a list or list as you go? This is going to be fun!
Chelle – I just heard of Josephine Tey not too long ago and she’s been on my radar for a while. Can’t wait to hear which books you decide on.
Maggie – I know, I need a summer break to finish the challenges 🙂
Nancy – Forgot to say, yes you should join in! We’ll all have a blast. ha.
Uh oh! Some new-to-me authors and titles. It’s always dangerous to read other people’s reading options for challenges. And mysteries, being my biggest weakness, at that! I have Dame for Hire in my TBR collection. My husband read it and wasn’t that impressed, but that doesn’t mean I won’t like it as he’s got a particular taste that is sometimes narrower than mine. Although I haven’t read the Mo Hayder title you mentioned (yet), I have read her The Devil in Nanking and absolutely loved it. LOVED it. Need I say more? Haha
Good luck to you. I’m looking foward to seeing what you chose in the end and reading your thoughts on your choices!
Haven’t heard of most of these, but can recommend The Shape of Water. I’ll definitely be doing this challenge too, as I read mystery books all the time!
Literary Feline – You are right, every time I do that I end up adding lots more titles to my TBR list 🙂 Glad to hear the Hayder book you read was awesome.
Heidijanek – Can’t wait to see your list. I’m glad to hear you liked the Camilleri book. I have heard some mixed reviews on it so we’ll see 🙂
I haven’t read (or even heard!) of these books but I wish you luck!
