Today I’m joining First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros hosted by Diane at Bibliophile by the Sea as I just started a new book so here it goes:
“The flames leaped high into the starry sky. Revelers clapped and reeled about each other in the golden flickering light, there and then gone, swallowed by the darkness and the whirling mass of their fellow merrymakers. As the orchestra behind me passed between songs, I could just make out the fevered pitches of a fiddle and the low thump of a drum playing a Scottish jig. It floated on the crisp night air through the open French doors. What the players lacked in skill, they certainly made up for in exuberance.”
A Grave Matter by Anna Lee Huber.
I mentioned yesterday that I really felt like reading a mystery from a series and preferably one that I was already familiar with so I picked up this book in the Lady Darby mystery series. This is the third book in the series and I am very excited to see what Kiera is up to in this entry.
What about you, what new book have you picked up? Have you read this series and would this intro make you curious?
This sounds like it has the potential to be a great mystery.
Nice opener — I like a good mystery.
Haven’t read any of Huber’s Lady Darby mysteries. Will check them out.
Sometimes there’s nothing like a good mystery!
Great excerpt! It felt lyrical, and the descriptions brought me right into the moments. Thanks!!
Here’s mine: “UNDER THE INFLUENCEâ€
I love that opening. The descriptions really pull you into the scene.
What a great opening! I’m definitely wanting to read on. I am close to being done with my current read, which I’m still on the fence about. I like it well enough–and invested in the characters–but the narration is not to my usual taste. I’m reserving my opinion until I finish. 🙂 Have a great week, Iliana!
Yay, Iliana, glad you are joining in. I like this weekly event. And this book sounds good. I haven’t read any of this series, but I have heard good things about it. It was a vivid description.
Welcome to First Chapter First Paragraph Tuesday Intros!
I love series books too and mine this week is: The Shape Shifter (Leaphorn & Chee #18) by Tony Hillerman at http://wp.me/pZnGI-u1
I like the opening. I am not familiar with this author.
I agree with the others that that’s a great opening! Can’t wait to hear what you’ll think of it!
Diane – I do enjoy this series so I’m hopeful this will be another good addition!
Beth F – Me too! Mysteries are my comfort reads.
Jenclair – I do like these. They are bit more on the cozy side but I like the historical setting.
Joann @ Lakeside Musing – I know right? I always like to have a mystery going on.
Laurel-Rain Snow – That was a good intro to the story and of course something big happens to end the fun!
Diana – I think that’s one of the reasons I really enjoy historical mysteries, I feel like I’m doing a bit of time-traveling!
Literary Feline – Oh what are you reading? I hope the book turns around for you!
Kay – I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to join in but hopefully I can get my act together and keep joining. It’s fun to get a glimpse of what everyone is reading.
Dagny – Thank you! I like the intro you posted too. I have to read Hillerman one of these days.
Nise’ – Maybe you’ll have to check her series out when you get a chance!
Melody – I’m not very far into it but I already like it a lot. There’s a bit of romance too so that’s a nice bonus 🙂
