I’m joining in for another great Top Ten Tuesday meme. This week’s prompt is what are the top ten books that have made you cry?
Got your hankies ready? Let me know if you’ve read any of these and if they made you cry. Some of these books also happen to be all time favorites so even if you don’t like a sad story do read them. I think you’ll be impressed.
The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
Black Dog of Fate by Peter Balakian
Me Before You by Jojo Moyes
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry
Death Be Not Proud by John J. Gunther
A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coehlo
One Day by David Nicholls
Oh and yesterday in my excitement to tell you about my BookPeople visit I forgot to do a recap of January’s reads. Let me just say it was a pretty good month. I read seven books, two were translations and three were for challenges. So the reading year got off to a good start!
I’ve read a handful of these, and yes, Me Before You really puts the screws to you! SO so heartbreaking, but I loved that book. Another one that (predictably) leveled me was “The Art of Racing in the Rain”. It was manipulative but I totally fell for it.
I generally try to avoid books that make me cry, but sometimes they are the ones that you remember best, and they do provide an opportunity for catharsis. The Book Thief, Me Before You, and the Kite Runner are three that I’ll never forget.
Book Thief and Owen Meany definitely made me sob. I also add Time Traveler’s Wife, Where the Red Fern Grows and Charlotte’s Web.
Owen Meany is on my TBR list, but I wasn’t aware that it was a tearjerker. I guess I’ll have to hear myself up for that one!
Great list! If I Stay made my list too, such an emotional and beautiful book My TTT 🙂
I guess I need to read Gayle Forman! She made a few lists. I also cried during Kite Runner and a Thousand Splendid Suns. Have you read his newest?
You had a great reading month. Nice list, I keep seeing The Book Thief on peoples lists. I want to read that one.
I forgot about Gayle Forman on my list. And a few other books! Oh, well, I got some of them. 🙂
I’m such a cry baby when it comes to books. I swear, if a book doesn’t make me cry at some point, something’s wrong with it. Okay, so maybe that’s an exaggeration. Only a slight one though. 😉
Of you list, I’ve only read two: The Book Thief and The Kite Runner. Both were sob worthy books for me.
I agree wholeheartedly on The Book Thief and will keep tissues handy when I read Moyes.
