This afternoon I was planning to spend some time in front of the shelves looking for a new book to start but I made the mistake of going to the mailbox and what did I get? The Persephone Catalogue and the Persephone Biannually. Well, there went the rest of the afternoon reading about the books with the gorgeous gray covers.
My personal library consists of nine Persephone books, and I see that they are now up to 86 books. Hmm, maybe if I’m a good Bookgirl I’ll get one for Christmas. Ha. Or maybe one day Christine and I will go back to the Persephone shop and I can fill up my suitcase with the books.
Anyway, back to reality. I still needed to find a new book to start so I decided to go with one of my Persephones. I’ve read five of the books I own, and because I was sort of in the mood for a thriller type story I decided on The Blank Wall by Elisabeth Sanxay Holding.
How about you, do you love these books too? Have a favorite?
I don’t even own one! I need to go start shopping now! 😛
I don’t have one either! Maybe I will ask someone to gift me one 🙂
I’m waiting for my first Persephone ever from the Persephone Christmas swap (eee excited). Just bought mine for my secret santa!
I’ve never owned one. I’m not even exactly sure why I need one (even though there are some of you that I follow that could give me a long list!). One of these days I need to look into it. I don’t want to be left out of the fun!
I don’t have any of the Persephone books, but maybe I should look into it. Danielle is a collector, I believe, so the two of you are good Persephone Reader models!
Two months ago, I had never heard of Persephone books. Now I own two and have picked up a couple in the library. They seem to be following me!
Iliana, I read and reviewed The Blank Wall for the R.I.P. challenge. Here’s my review: http://paperbackreader2.blogspot.com/2009/09/blank-wall.html
You’re in for a fun thrilling read!
Like Jodie, I have just bought my Secret Santee their Persephone and am so excited :). I have amassed twenty-three Persephones and so far my favourite is Lady Rose and Mrs Memmary by Ruby Ferguson with Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Laski a close second (both of those reviews and others can be read by clicking on the Persephone Books tag in the review linked to above).
Can you believe I don’t own one?!! Although it was 10 years ago, I do remember our little adventure to find the Persephone bookstore in London. What a lovely little place too.
Hmmmm, perhaps I need to take a look at their catalogue and pick something out!!
Simon over at Stuck in a Book has sparked my interest in them. I want one (ok, all of them) so much! Maybe we’ll both get a present from Persephone for Christmas. 🙂
I have thus far resisted the lure of Persephone. I do think though that since you have only nine of them and have read five soon to be six, that Santa should bring you at least one new one for Christmas 🙂
When I go to the UK, I will go the shop to get something. Even if I don’t get a book, I will go for the bookmarks.
Right now, I am on a quest to get the White Signo pen for my journalling. I think I found a local place, although I have to drive to the suburbs to get it.
Melody – I think your bookshelves need one! 🙂
Veens – Start writing your letter to Santa now! 🙂
Jodie – Oh how fun! Just imagine which one you’ll get. One of my all time faves is Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. Such a charming story.
Sandy – You NEED one. That’s all there is to it and of course you can’t be left out of the fun!
jenclair – I can’t remember how many books Danielle has but I am sure she has more than me. Lucky girl. Oh and I just noticed that she’s also mentioned in the Persephone Biannually – how cool is that!
vivienne – yay, you’ve discovered them. Aren’t they gorgeous? I so want a whole row from my bookshelf filled with them!
Paperback_Reader – Yay, thank you for your link. I can’t wait to read your thoughts on it. I started it last night and so far it’s wonderful. Of course now I’m a bit jealous because you have 23 books 🙂
Christine – chica, what is wrong with you! haha.. The ones I’ve read, are have been so good and I really think you’d like them. And, OMG it has been more than 10 years right? I can’t believe how time has flown by.
Tiffany – I think we both need to get started on those letters to Santa so we can get a Persephone book!
Stefanie – See, I totally agree with you and think it’s about time to get another 🙂 Now, why are you resisting – you know it’s no use because one day you will get one!
Isabel – Their little shop is very cute so I highly recommend going. I’m sure you’ll walk out with at least one book. And, I may be going to the craft store this weekend so I will look for your signo pen. I want one too! 🙂
I’m with Sandy. I don’t know much about these books at all, though I’m intrigued.
I discovered my first Persephone’s on our recent trip to London and I am definitely hooked now!
Believe it or not I had never heard of Persephone’s until I started blogging. I don’t own one yet, but I will! Enjoy the read!
I’m planning to explore The Persephone Catalogue and books in the series more in 2010. There are just so many new series out there that reprint and republish the outmoded and forgotten classics! 🙂
I have also received the persephone catalogue few days ago and I am just adding post it notes in all the pages of the books I want!!! Not a good thing when I try to save money but, I can dream! Right? So I think that to be safe I might just get one: #2/ Mariana, I did fall in love with the cover than the woodcut in the catalogue. Do you have this one? I would like to know your opinion if you do. Come by my blog as I have posted some pictures of my journals. Enjoy your weekend.
I love the way those books look, but I don’t happen to own any myself — too bad, really! It’s just that they don’t often appear in bookstores around here, and practically never in used bookstores or library sales, and I haven’t gotten around to special ordering them. I should some day!
Like you, I’m crazy about the Persephone books. I only own three, but I especially loved The Home-Maker. It cast such a fresh perspective on being a stay at home mom, and it was written how many years ago?~! It’s a book I won’t forget, and I can well imagine that most Persephones are like that. I wish I could visit their bookstore in real life…
Anna – You need to check ’em out although I’ll warn you, you may become addicted to them 🙂
Karen – Yay! I had heard of Persephone before I went to London so when I finally got the chance to go I told my friend who I was visiting at the time that some of the other sights could wait, I had to go see the Persephone shop 🙂
Kathleen – Oh the books are so gorgeous. I found out about Persephone books via a lit forum I used to visit all the time – way before I started blogging. Unfortunately that sort of fell apart but it was such a great resource.
Matthew – I know, new reprints keep coming out and those book designers are really coming up with some yummy looking books aren’t they? For example, I really love the NYRB classics and Danielle recently mentioned some others – I’m blanking on the name right now – which looks so pretty too. Oh dear, I want them all! 🙂
Roxane – I have Mariana but I haven’t read it yet! I know, how embarrassing. I have heard a lot of good things about that one so that was why I got it. The Far Cry is very good too although I have to say at first I wasn’t liking it but by the end I really enjoyed it. Ooh, can’t wait to see pics of your journal!
Dorothy W. – I know, I wish bookstores carried them because really those shipping costs and the pound make them so expensive! I think the Book Depository has them a bit cheaper? I can’t remember. Now, I did find some of the Persephone Classics at B&N so I had a gift card one time and was able to splurge on two then.
Bellezza – You know, I think these books are just timeless. I finished one last night and could totally understand the main character and how she felt that everyone was always pulling at her for her attention – and I don’t even have children! I hope you do get to visit their bookstore one day. It’s such a treat!
