Happy Sunday Salon everyone. It’s been a while since I had the chance to participate but here I am today.
The trip to Austin was a quick one but oh what fun. Aside from doing a bit of wandering around the South Austin area, where it’s filled with an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants, we also went to the Austin Museum of Art to see the exhibit on New Art in Austin. My favorite pieces were from Alyson Fox who used old books for her art. She stripped the books of the pages and then made some illustrations on covers. You can see more on each of the artists by checking out the interactive website.
We also spent a couple of hours hanging out in BookPeople. Aside from a wonderful selection of books, they also have some great gift items. I fell in love with a few pieces from the Flash Fiction Gems, jewelry with a story behind it. How clever is that?
Of course I added more books to my wish list and bought a book but I’m going tell you about that in another post. Right now I have to get ready to go have lunch with a friend, and then I have a 50% Off coupon to use at Half Price Books. Can’t let that go to waste. So hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday.
It’s a good thing I don’t live near that Book People – jewelry is another one of my passions, and I’d never be able to resist jewelry with a story 🙂
I’m looking forward to hearing about the new book(s) too!
By the way, you’ve won a giveaway at Bookstack…check it out 🙂
I like Alyson Fox’s concept for her work.
Book People looks like a fun place.
Did you have a nice meal also?
Thanks for posting a picture of Book People. I am such a visual person all I was thinking about was what does it look like? Scroll, scroll, voila! Thank you.
“jewelry with a story behind it. How clever is that?” Very clever and possibly my new obsession?
Ugg, I’m sooo lusting after BookPeople!!!! And definitely gotta check out that jewelry.
That’s quite a big book shop !
3 floors ?
Happy Sunday from a new member of The Sunday Salon. I love the store!
ravenous reader – Me too. I love funky jewelry and they had some gorgeous stuff. Ooh and I won a book?! Cool – thank you 🙂
Isabel – I immediately thought of you when I saw her stuff. Believe it or not, we just ate at Whole Foods the whole time! ha,ha… It was just close by when we got hungry so that’s where we went.
Megan – You betcha. I love looking at pics too and I really should post more but I get so lazy 🙂 — I think I’m going to have to treat myself to some of that jewelry for my birthday or something!
Andi – It’s such a great store. I wish we had one here in Dallas.
Gavin – We have a few double story stores in Dallas but those are the B&N, so for an indie store to be that big, that’s quite the store 🙂
J. Kaye – Hey, thank you for stopping by! Hope you are enjoying the sunday book talk 🙂
Sounds like you’ve had a wonderful trip, Iliana! All the jewelry are so pretty… I know I’ll not resist buying them with those designs. And as for books, the more the merrier! ;P
Thanks for sharing! 🙂
It sounds like you had a nice trip, Iliana. The book art display sounds neat. I love stuff like that.
I hope you have a great week.
oh, looks like you went to heaven! hope the book stores treated you well and I can’t wait to hear what you got!!
thanks for the birthday wishes (;
I took one look at that picture and started drooling. How on earth do people who live locally ever manage to get out? I would have set up permanent residence I know. And what’s this about 50% offers? I think I’m living in the wrong place!
I let my 50 percent off Half Price Books coupon go to waste. Weep.
Sounds like a great weekend! Austin has a little bit of everything, doesn’t it?
Glad you had a nice time. I was really interested in the work of Alyson Fox. I have to admit though, I’m always just a little squeamish about tearing the pages out of a book or ‘defacing’ it in other ways. I’ve seen some really neat projects that people have done with discarded books (lamps, chairs, etc.). I really like them, but I guess I just feel a little sad about the lost words. Is that crazy? I guess that’s just the librarian in me. I just can’t help it. 🙂
Melody – The designs in the store were kind of different than those on her web site but still really cute. I need to remind my husband of these when it gets closer to my birthday – ha,ha…
Literary Feline – I do too. Hope you have a great week!
Bethany – I tried to be a good Bookgirl and only got two books. I’ll post on those next.
Ann Darnton – I know can you imagine? I swear that’s one of the reasons I want to move back to Austin 🙂
Alea – Oh no! That is sad. Well, the only cure is that you still have to go to HPB and get a book. I’m sure that’s the only thing to lift up your spirits 😉
jenclair – Austin is great. I went to university down there so I have lots of good memories of the place 🙂
Lisa – Oh I totally understand. I used to feel the same way but since I’ve been studying bookbinding and book arts my idea about altering books has changed a lot. Now, I see this as a way for forgotten books to somehow “live” again and be used and admired 🙂
I want to go here ! Maybe a good reason to visit Austin…
