In my previous post I mentioned that I couldn’t seem to find something to read right? Well, I decided to just grab four books and go with it. So, yesterday I packed my books and headed over to a cool cafe. I had a mocha latte and started reading for a couple of hours. Bliss.
Let me tell you about the books because they’ve all captured my attention and now I’m jumping from book to book. It’s great.
- Blaming by Elizabeth Taylor. This author is one I’ve been wanting to discover for a couple of years now. I know some of you in blogland have mentioned her a lot and I just hadn’t had the chance. One of the blurbs on the back cover of the book is by Anne Tyler and she says “Jane Austen, Elizabeth Taylor, Barbara Pym, Elizabeth Bowen – soul-sisters all.” So, I think you can imagine what the style of the book must be like. I’m half way into it and it’s really good.
- The Seville Communion by Arturo Perez-Reverte. This book counts as a challenge read for two of my challenges. Right now, I can’t say too much about the book. It’s a bit slow but I do like all the descriptions of Seville. I visited there many years ago and it’s nice to revisit even if it’s only through the pages of a book.
- Apples & Oranges by Marie Brenner. A memoir about a turbulent sibling relationship. The story of the brother and sister is interesting to say the least but the aside on the orchards and apples (the brother has given up being a trial lawyer to own orchards) is not holding my interest as much.
- Die With Me by Elena Forbes. A british police procedural. So far I like the detectives so that’s a good thing.
The rest of the day I hope to catch up with some of you who are doing The Sunday Salon, read the latest issue of Estella’s Revenge and pop over to Half Price Books to make use of my coupon.

sounds lovely – the stop at a coffee shop to read and sip frosty drinks. hmmm…can I join? I added the Elizabeth Taylor book to my TBR. never heard of her before.
oh what fun!! coffee shops are great 🙂
I love any day when I have time to head to the cafe and get a coffee and just sit there with a book (or books!). Such a treat. 🙂
Mrs. B – Yes come along! 🙂 Hope you do add Elizabeth Taylor to your radar. I’m half way through the book and am really into the story.
bethany canfield – they are! I have a host of coffee shops I plan to discover in my new hometown. We’ve got tons of indie shops so it’s great!
marie – It is a treat isn’t it? I wish I could do this every day! 🙂
It sounds wonderful to go and read somewhere. One of my favorite things to do is to head to Panera Bread with my book, order an elephant ear and tea, and read away.
I agree with Anne Tyler about Elizabeth Taylor! Hope you enjoy the book. Haven’t read that one, but may pick it up now 🙂
A mocha latte and books sounds like bliss indeed 🙂
I have several Elizabeth Taylor books on my shelf, but Blaming isn’t one of them. I’ve only read one by her, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, and loved it. Enjoy!
I’ve never read Elizabeth Taylor, but since I love all those authors she’s compared with, I must put her on the list.
How fun, to have some time to read at the cafe.
I am not familiar withe Elena Forbes. I will have to check that one out further. I read Apples and Oranges not too long ago, and I didn’t warm up to it right away.
I hope you have a great week, Iliana!
Nicole – Oh that sounds like a good time! I used to not be able to read in a coffee shop or restaurant but now I can easily tune people out 🙂
Gentle Reader – It’s really very good and again makes me wonder just why I waited so long to discover her you know? But, the wait has been worth it!
Nymeth – I could use another one right now! 😉
Ex Libris – I think your blog must have been one of the first where I heard about Elizabeth Taylor! So thank you for bringing her to my attention.
Ravenous Reader – She’s in good company isn’t she? I still haven’t discovered Elizabeth Bowen either so I see I have more good books to look forward to!
Literary Feline – So far I am digging the mystery book. I believe this is going to be a series so it will be interesting to see how things turn out at the end. I remember you mentioned Apples & Oranges and I will have to go back and check your review… I am not liking all the apple talk. You have a great one too! 🙂
Mmm…mocha latte. I had a latte yesterday, and was craving chocolate by the end of the day. Next time I think I’ll go for the mocha version.
I also had a hard time this weekend choosing what book to pick up next. Then the library decided for me when I got an email saying I had two books on hold that were now ready to be picked up.
Hope you had a great weekend!
Mocha Latte – yum!! Not familiar with the authors you mentioned. The Elizabeth Taylor appeals the most out of your list (and your comments!). That cafe even has yoga…how fun!
Alisia – I was so tempted to go back today for another one 🙂 And, yay for library holds coming through to the rescue right? you’ll have to tell us what you got!
christine – I know, one of these days I will go out there and check out the classes. They also have poetry nights and all sorts of other events so it’ll be a fun place to revisit. you should check out the Taylor when you are looking for something a bit more quiet but with a lot of depth.
The Taylor book sounds great — I’ve enjoyed her novels and want to read more!
Blaming sounds great! That blurb would definitely make me pick that one up. I’ve not read anything by Taylor either. I’ll have to find something of hers soon.
The cafe (and books) looks great! I love that they have happy hour yoga on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Dorothy W. – I’m so glad I have more titles to look forward to by her. It’s been a great read.
Lisa – I know, how can anyone resist that blurb right? Even if you don’t know about the book you can just imagine!
Andi – I need to make it to one of the yoga classes soon. I’ve stopped going since my move and I can tell!
Those all sound good. I really need to pick up another Elizabeth Taylor novel, too. And I want to read more Arturo Perez-Reverte as well. So many books….sigh….
I love Perez-Reverte, but haven’t read anything by him in a few years. Too many other writers to catch up on. Looking forward to your review of Seville Communion!
