I had such a hard time picking a new book to read this weekend. Don’t you hate it when that happens? I stared at my stacks of unread books, would pick up one only to put it back down. I still have lots of books to read for my reading challenges, and I have a lot of unread books that I am excited about reading one of these days but I just couldn’t find the right one.
Finally, I selected Don’t Look at Me Like That by Diana Athill and I think I’ve picked a good one. Here’s a blurb from the back cover: “In England half a century ago, well-brought-up young women are meant to aspire to the respectable life. Some things are not to be spoken of; some are most certainly not to be done. There are rules, conventions. Meg Bailey obeys them. She progresses from Home Counties school to un-Bohemian art college with few outwards signs of passion or frustration. Her personality is submerged in polite routines; even with her best friend, Roxane, what can’t be said looms far larger than what can. But circumstances change. Meg gets a job and moves to London. Roxane gets married to a man picked out by her mother. And then Meg does something shocking – shocking not only by the standards of her time, but by our own.”
I look forward to reading more about this shocking event.
Actually, I didn’t get a lot of reading done this weekend but that’s because I was out most of Saturday spending the day with a friend and today I did some crafting. So I need to catch up with my blog reading and my book reading.
And, most importantly Melissa won the copy of Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why. Hope you enjoy it!
I can relate to your feeling of not knowing what to read next. I have so many books I want to read or should be reading for challenges but sometimes nothing seems quite right. Glad you found one that stuck. 🙂
That sounds like a good book–I will have to add it to my list. Part of the reason I try to stay away from challenges is my mood changes and then when I am looking for a book, the list I made just doesn’t seem quite right.
Crafting is good. It moves your mind in different directions and you become more creative. Then, you can appreciate your books more!
Enjoy the nice weather while you can.
Ice storms can show up any day now.
That is bad when you have so many books, and just can’t find the right one!! But it does sound like you picked a winner!! I can’t wait to read your review. It sounds like one I would like to read myself!
That book does sound like a good choice! I just read that you are also planning to make your own holiday cards this year and that sounds fun! I really need to get on to reading the book for next month’s book group discussion but I am a bit behind. Maybe I will get some time over the holiday weekend….
That’s funny! Sometimes it takes me longer to pick out my next book than it does to read it!
I have those moments too, when nothing looks quite right. Fortunately, they tend to pass fairly quickly!
Yes, yes, yes! I do hate it when that happens- and it happened to me last night. I felt like I’d picked up everything and nothing was right. Up and down the stairs, visiting my various shelves. I finally settled on a Barbara Vina (which I’m enjoying). Your choice sounds intriguing.
Awww suspense! Something shocking by the standard of our time!
I have mentioned previously that I need to have books lined up waiting for me. Sometimes I do have picked the wrong book at the wrong time, take it with me to work and only to find it’s not up to my liking. So I share your frustration.
Tanabata – Isn’t it awful. It’s usually not so bad for me but yesterday I must have opened 4-5 books and nothing!
Danielle – Exactly. This is why I don’t seem to finish many challenges 🙂 I’ve been reading more of this book I picked up and I think you’d enjoy it. Good character study.
Isabel – It was nice to craft. I am embarrassed to admit I even found new products I had bought and hadn’t opened! Yikes. I’m loving the weather too.
Stephanie – So far so good with this book. I’m really enjoying it.
Christine – I’m thinking about it but haven’t committed just yet. I may try to craft this week and see what turns up. Oh and I need to start the book for our book group too.
Stephanie – Ha,ha… I can see that happening to me too.
Dorothy W. – Thank goodness for that right? I would hate it if it was all the time. A true reading emergency!
Tara – Oh no – we must have been on the same wavelength. Glad you found one that worked for you too.
Matt – I know, I’m just getting to the “shocking” part I think. This will be a good one.
