Thank you to everyone who’s entered the giveaway. I am loving all of the responses and daydreaming about visiting the places you guys mentioned. A friend asked me what my destination would be and I am going to be sneaky and say that I’d take a jet plane to Monterrey to visit my family, then we’d hop over to Germany to visit my husband’s family and finally we’d go relax in Italy, where I’ve always wanted to go. Anyway, there’s still time to enter if you haven’t yet, and yes, it is open to international entries.
So, this weekend was busy with chores and stuff and I am still behind on my blog reading and such but I did carve out some time to read a short story for the R.I.P. Challenge. Actually, I’m done with my challenge but I haven’t had a chance to post reviews and besides maybe I’ll even get another book read so no wrap up post just yet, but back to the short story.
Yesterday I read Andi’s enthusiastic review of her reading so far of 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill, and as I’ve had that book on my shelf for quite a while, I thought it’s time to pick it up.
I only read the first story, Best New Horror, and I think I’m going to be in for quite a ride. The story features Eddie Carroll, an editor of an anthology of horror fiction, who has grown disillusioned with the quality of the stories that come across his desk.
But one day he receives a story called “Buttonboy”, which is so disturbing and different that he decides he wants to publish it in his anthology but first he must meet the author. As he looks for the author, who from all accounts is a very strange man, Eddie recounts more of the story for us the readers. And, yes, it’s quite a revolting tale, but most disturbing of all is how Eddie somehow becomes a part of the story.
Great short story and what a great ending. I am really looking forward to reading more of this book but I can guarantee it won’t be my night time read. Shudders at that thought! Anyway, hopefully tomorrow I’ll have a review for you of another spooky story.
I like the way your mind works in regards to your travel plans. 🙂 That sounds like a great dream. I have Joe Hill’s book too but haven’t read it. Your post makes it awfully tempting.
I enjoyed reading Heart-Shaped Box so I’ll definitely check this out! 🙂 I’m glad you’re enjoying the book, Iliana!
Your travel plans sound wonderful! 🙂
I haven’t read much for the R.I.P. challenge yet, but I hope to read a few in October. And I need to get back to Poe. I’ve read a couple stories so far but haven’t yet experienced his most famous ones. Yay for spooky stories!
I’ve been listening to this collection on CD, and I thought “Best New Horror” was neat too. My fave so far is about the inflatable boy. 🙂 (Since I don’t have a table of contents, it’s difficult for me to remember the titles! lol)
I have this on my tbr pile and plan on starting it before long. I loved Heart-Shaped Box.
20th Century Ghosts seems like it would be right up my alley.
Literary Feline – Can you tell I just want to be a world traveler? 🙂 I hope you do get to Joe Hill’s book. I can’t remember, have you read Heart-Shaped Box? Very good!
Melody – Wasn’t it excellent? I especially liked the first half of the book but still it was overall a great story. I’m curious if he has something else in the works now.
tanabata – I just need some money and time and could do that 🙂 I love Poe’s stories and haven’t read any in a long time. Now would be good to read one wouldn’t it!
Eva – I definitely want to read more in the book and will be looking forward to the inflatable boy – that already sounds creepy 🙂
Nymeth – Yay, I hope you’ll enjoy this one too. So far, I think it’s going to be a great collection!
Stephanie – I promise to post more if I read another story from the collection!
Sounds like a great short story! I really should spend more time reading such, but this one might be a smidge too scary for me. 🙂
This sounds like a fun anthology–I’m going to have to see if my library has it. It sounds a bit ‘grittier’ than what I’m used to, but variety is good!
Amy Reads Good Books – I was trying to read a short story a week earlier in the year and that was great but I sort of fell out of habit of doing that. With Halloween around the corner this is the perfect time for this collection but gotta read it with the lights on 🙂
Danielle – Yes, gritty – that’s a perfect description for this one! Did you read his novel Heart-Shaped Box? That was very good but also a bit scary!
How do u think I should get all the books that you mention here!!! I might collapse 🙂 🙂
i love where you want to go.. wow! Germany! Italy… ahhhh! dreaming on! 🙂 🙂
