Tonight I feel like I have an open mic night going on at home. The poems of Muriel Rukeyser, Ogden Nash, Gwendolyn Brooks and many others have been flowing and I’m enjoying every bit of their words. What’s going on at Casa Bookgirl you ask?
Well, the good folks at Sourcebooks sent me a copy of Poetry Speaks Expanded, a book with CDs featuring noted poets reading from their own work. It’s truly amazing. I have a feeling this is going to become one of my favorite poetry anthologies.
For now I want to sit back and enjoy the rest of the evening with these poets so I’ll leave you with this Dorothy Parker poem to enjoy:
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.

Ah. I remember this poem. I love it and actually copied it down in one of my notebooks. Thanks for posting this.
I love this poem so sensibly comedic.
So glad to hear it’s good. They s ent me one too but I haven’t gotten in the mail yet. Maybe today…
Oooh, that CD sounds great!
That’s so cute!
Dark Orpheus – It’s a great poem isn’t it?
Jodie – Indeed!
Stefanie – Did you get your copy yet? I have a feeling you will love it.
Dorothy W. – It is! There are intros and the readings too of course. I love that some of the recordings are a bit scratchy. Somehow it adds to the feeling that you are listening to this live somewhere.
Nancy, aka Bookfool – Hee 🙂
Oh my goodness. LOVE Dorothy Parker. That poem always makes me chuckle. Have fun reading…and reading…and reading this weekend!
Very few people recite poems these days. Sad.
Miss Parker – she needed some Zoloft, Paxil, or Valium.
Tiffany – One of these days I will read more by Dorothy! You have a great weekend too.
Isabel – Que mala! 🙂
