I know, what am I doing joining another challenge! But, I just can’t help myself. I missed out on this challenge last year and I have some books that I really want to read that would be perfect for this challenge so I’m going to give it a go. Plus, I can’t resist making a book list. heh.
So, Maggie’s Southern Reading challenge starts May 15 and ends August 15 and requires reading three books. Click on the link to get more info and to sign up.
I’ve gone through my shelves and came up with the following list:
- Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen. I know so many of you have read this one and loved it.
- Gods in Alabama by Joshilyn Jackson. Another one I’ve been meaning to read for years now.
- Sights Unseen by Kaye Gibbons. I read one of her books quite a long time ago and liked it so it’ll be nice to revisit with this author.
Other potential reads that I may switch out (you know I’m a moody reader) could be something by Billie Letts, Fannie Flagg, Edward P. Jones or maybe (finally) a William Faulkner book. Well, we’ll see how that goes.
You know what I would like to read actually? A good mystery series set in the South. Anyone have a recommendation? I love mysteries but I guess most of the ones I tend to read are set in other countries. If you’ve got a favorite let me know and maybe I can add it to my list.
Anyway, thanks again to Maggie for hosting the challenge and good luck to everyone who is participating!
I am tempted to join this one too although I know I shouldn’t. Garden Spells is one I really want to try and get to this year if possible. And gods in Alabama is one that has been on my list to read for awhile now.
Anne George’s mystery series are set in the South. If you don’t mind cozies, they’re worth trying.
I’m not joining more, but this sounds like fun! I loved Garden Spells and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it! 🙂
Oh you’re going to LOVE gods in Alabama. Or at least I hope you do because I loved it.
I really liked Garden Spells too.
Enjoy!
Yes–this challenge is way too good to pass up! I’ll be interested to see what you think of Gods in Alabama.
Iliana, noooooooo, not another challenge!!! 🙂 Shoot, I enjoyed this one too much last year not to do it again! Your first two books will be on my list too. My third will probably be an Anne George mystery – these were recommended by Joy last year and I really liked the first one – cute and enjoyable.
If I wasn’t so busy with the WWII challenge, I would’ve joined this one. I love Southern fiction. I haven’t read any Fannie Flagg, though I’d like to. I haven’t read the ones you listed, so I’m looking forward to your thoughts on these.
Oh, I’m glad you’re going to participate in this one. I am going to, as well, but I haven’t chosen my books, yet. I’ve read Garden Spells and Gods in Alabama both. I liked them both.
Literary Feline – Do it, join in! 🙂 You know I read one of Anne George’s mysteries and I don’t know if the timing was off or what but I didn’t like it. I read it for a book group too and everyone loved it so made me wonder what was wrong with me! 🙂
Melody – I really shouldn’t as I’ve fallen so behind but what the heck! 🙂
aka Nik – I remember you saying you loved Gods in Alabama. I really have been meaning to get to that book for years now so hopefully this time it will happen!
Tiffany – I can’t wait to see your list!
Joanna – Ha,ha.. I know what a bad influence right? 🙂 We’ll have to compare notes on our books!
Anna – I totally know what you mean. And, if you want to check out Fannie Flagg I highly recommend Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man. What a great read. Funny, sweet, a bit sad. Just lovely.
Lisa – Yay, so glad you are joining too. Glad to hear you liked both of those reads. I’m looking forward to them. Have fun coming up with your list and can’t wait to see it!
I loved Garden Spells, I read it last year for the challenge!
Happy Reading!
txmommy – Yay, I’m really looking forward to it! 🙂
I should read more Southern Lit, but I’m snowed under with my own piles at the moment. I hope you like Kaye Gibbons–I went through a phase where I read a bunch of her books. I’d love to revisit some of them!
Yay, you’ve joined! I have both Garden Spells and Gods in Alabama on my list. Happy reading!
I’m signing up for this one too! I’ve really enjoyed both of Jackson’s books that I’ve read: I want to put the Swimming Pool title on my list this year!
Have you read Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil?
