I hope you all had a great weekend. Ours was filled with a lot of rain and I’m guessing a lot of people had cabin fever because when we went to Barnes & Noble on Sunday afternoon it was packed. Had a hard time finding a place to sit although it does make me happy to see so many people hanging out at the bookstore.
Anyway, I have received a few interesting Advance Reader Copies and all of a sudden I’ve been requesting a lot of books on NetGalley. I think I kind of got hooked around the time we went on vacation. So this post is to show you some of the new books that have arrived at my door and. I will also tell you about the eGalleys but I am going to save those for a separate post.
Zagreb Noir. The Noir series published by Akashic Books takes the reader further into Easter Europe. From the back cover: In Zagreb, there is a meeting of a continental optimism and a Mediterranean relativism, and this is why the city has never found its peace. I can’t think of any books that I’ve read by Croatian writers so I’m really looking forward to this.
Gideon Smith and the Mask of the Ripper by David Barnett. This is a fantastical steampunk adventure that takes place in nineteenth century Britain. I think this may be part of a series but given that I don’t read many steampunk books I think it would ok to read this as a standalone.
The Drowning Lesson by Jane Shemilt. The Jordan family thought they would return from their gap year abroad enriched, better people, a closer family. Not minus one child. Oh this sounds like a good suspense novel.
So have you read any of these? Which one would you start with if you had these books?
I am hoping for more ran soon, but not today. Maybe after my daughter’s Halloween party! She’s so excited. I would hate to ruin it with rain. I used to have a pen pal in Zagreb and so just seeing that name in a title makes me curious. Sounds like you’ve got some good reading ahead of you, Iliana. I still need to read the Jane Schemilt book I have. Her new one sounds good too.
I have that new Jane Shemilt book. I ordered it a while ago based on someone’s blog post, I think. Anyway, I’m looking forward to it. I’ve seen a bunch of those ‘Location’ Noir books and wondered about them. Have you read any of them? This was certainly the weekend to stay in, wasn’t it? Or rather, we stayed in. Mostly. We did get out to Jack Allen’s in Round Rock for a burger on Saturday evening. It was good. 🙂
The moment I log onto NetGalley, I mysteriously end up requesting more than a few books. So I have been forcing myself to stay away. I still have a few I need to review.
I have a copy of The Drowning Lesson. Started it, but for some reason it didn’t appeal to me. Maybe I should give it another chance.
Literary Feline – How was Mouse’s Halloween party? Hope she had a blast. We are getting soaked today and tomorrow. Which means I should enjoy the dreary weather with some extra time for reading!
Kay – I have read bits and pieces from one of the Noir books – I think it was London Noir but it’s been a while. I just checked on their website and they have upwards of 30 books in the series. Wow. I had no idea. Now I’m really curious! Oh and can you believe I’ve not been to Jack Allen – everyone keeps telling me I’m missing out!
Athira – I know what you mean. It’s like being a kid in a candy shop. No control whatsoever 🙂
Jenclair – Maybe it was one of those, right book, wrong time type moments. That happens a lot to me I have to say.
I’m quite intrigued with The Drowning Lesson after reading Jane’s previous book. I guess I need to check out this title as well since I enjoyed her last book.
