Finally I wrote up some thoughts on A Fatal Grace by Louise Penny and Playing with the Moon by Eliza Graham. Both books I really enjoyed and would recommend although if you want to read A Fatal Grace I suggest reading the first book in the Three Pines series, then again maybe that’s just me who prefers to read a series in order.
Moving on, I did start The Book Thief and I have to admit it took me a bit to get into it but now it’s going great. I like it and can’t wait to see what happens next. I’m at the part where Liesel wants to mail off letters to her mom. Oh this is such a sad book.
And, I’m about half way through Sleepless Nights. Don’t forget that discussion for this Slaves of Golconda pick starts Tuesday over at the MetaxuCafe forum. I get the feeling I’ll be lurking a lot and not discussing much. It’s not at all what I was expecting and frankly I’m feeling lost with this book.
I’ve actually finished off a couple of other books so hopefully I’ll write up something on those soon. Now I’m off to see if I can finish Sleepless Nights.
I was a little confused by the beginning of The Book Thief, too. I’m almost finished with it now though. It’s very sad, indeed. I find I have to take breaks from it sometimes. Put it down and come back. I think war time books do that to me more lately though. I hope you enjoy it. I can’t wait to read the review.
I doubt I will be able to finished Sleepless Nights by 31st July. Oh well.
I’ll be lurking with you then. 🙂
Sleepless Nights was different than I expected too — I decided to stop trying to piece everything together, and just enjoy the language and mood of it.
Ah yes, The Book Thief is a sad book. Very sad. But oh so good. One of my favorites ever. I’m glad you were able to get into it.
‘The Book Thief’ is sad, but at the end don’t you think there is an element of hope as well, hope that there are good people out there and in fact they make up the majority.
I am sad. I had to return The Book Thief to the library last night. I think I might have to go by and see if Half Price Books has it!!
I did pick up a bit of interim fluff – Austenland. I have a feeling it is going to be a good laugh!
Oh, yeah, The Book Thief is sad. But, it’s also just an amazing, moving book with characters that you can believe in. They’re all flawed – every single one of them. It’s the books with perfect people that are more difficult to buy, I’ve found.
Embrace that lost feeling! Don’t just lurk around the discussion even if you didn’t finish you can still contribute.
OK, you’ve convinced me, I’ve added both Louise Penny’s books to my wishlist. 😛
Have you gotten to the parts with the illustrations yet?
OhmyGad, I wish I was reading The Book Thief for the first time along with you. Death makes a great narrator doesn’t he?? The book wouldn’t have been nearly as affecting without his humor and general thoughtfulness. *swoon*
I’m with you and Dorothy W. on Sleepless Nights, it was different than I expected. But like Dorothy, I just sort of stopped trying to figure it out and I enjoyed it. I’d love to hear more about what you thought!
I had a hard time getting into The Book Thief as well, but I did really like it in the end. It is quite heavy, though. As for Sleepless Nights I gave up reading about page 43. I’m a little disappointed in myself, but I was just not meshing with it. The parts I found enjoyable were just too few and far in between. Maybe I will pick it back up later, or better yet, I might just give her essays a try instead!
I hope you won’t have sleep night reading the book. 🙂
I stopped by the library and checked; the book has a queue so I’ll have to wait a bit.
aka Nik – Yes, I’m taking breaks from it too. I feel like I need to get a good “happy/cheery” book to go along with this one.
Dark Orpheus – I didn’t finish Sleepless Nights and don’t think I’ll be finishing it. I’m still so lost!
Dorothy W. – I think you read the book in the right frame of mind. I need to let go of trying to make sense of it.
Heather – I am about half way so I did get into it and it’s flying.
Ann – So far, I’m not seeing much hope but I’m glad to hear that’s something to look forward to in the story.
Christine – I hope you can find The Book Thief at HP! Will you be at book group? I’ll be there.
Nancy, aka Bookfool – See, I didn’t expect that at all. I guess because I thought it was a YA book either all there were good or bad characters but these are definitely very complex. I like that.
Stefanie – Ha,ha.. Love that. I promise to visit the forum and see what’s going on.
Tanabata – yay. I hope you enjoy them. I heard someone describe Gamache as sort of a modern day Hercule Poirot and I can see that.
Isabel – Not yet. I’m intrigued now!
Andi – Did you just swoon over death?! 🙂 Actually there was one passage I read last night that I found absolutely chilling. I need to post about that.
Gentle Reader – I’m glad you enjoyed Sleepless Nights. Have you been over at the forum? I need to catch up on what everyone thinks about it!
Danielle – I know I feel kind of bad that I want to give up on it because it is a Slaves pick but it shouldn’t have to be a struggle right?
Matt – I think you jinxed me! I had insomnia last night!! Okay, I won’t blame the book this time.
