I feel like I’ve been in a fog all weekend. Unfortunately my allergies were acting up so I had to take some medicine and well there goes my whole weekend. That’s what I get for cleaning house – ha,ha.
I did manage to make a dent in my reading of Billy Boyle by James R. Benn. The hero is sometimes charming but then other times he seems a bit naive. Still the book is holding my interest so that’s good.
When I wanted something a bit different I turned to Tin House. I’ve read one story, A Shadow Table by Alice Fulton, which I really liked, I’ve read some of the poetry, and I look forward to reading the interview with poet Frank Bidart later. Thanks to Stefanie, who had a giveaway for his chapbook sometime ago, I got to read some of his poetry. Did you know he was the first poet to have a chapbook, Music Like Dirt, become a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize?
Anyway, hope everyone has a great start to the week.
I hope you have a good week too, Iliana. That’s an interesting tidbit about Frank Birdart!
Hi Iliana, I’m sorry to hear about your allergies. Cleaning house is always a mistake :). Sounds like I will need to check out Frank Bidart, thanks for mentioning him.
I hope you have a good week too.
That’s too bad about your allergies. Sounds like a good reason to avoid cleaning! 😉
How do you like Tin House? It’s one I’ve been thinking of trying.
So good to see someone else reads Tin House! I haven’t been able to pick up a copy of their most recent edition, but I absolutely love Frank Bidart.
My start is not so great. A lady at the gas station noticed that one of my tires was low. I took it to the tire place before work this morning. There goes part of my $600.00. Oh well; at least a business will be able to make a little profit.
Sorry that your allergies were acting up! At least you were able to get some reading done. That is very interesting about Music Like Dirt.
I had a busy weekend and some relaxing as well.
I don’t usually have a problem with allergies, but then I don’t dust as much as I should either….Billy Boyle sounds like an interesting read, I hadn’t come across that one before.
Ahh, Tin House. I REALLY need to subscribe! I freakin love their stuff, and some of my favorite short story writers (Miranda July) have published in TH regularly.
Sorry to hear about the allergies, but I’m RIGHT THERE with ya! Mine have been killin’ me.
I hope you feel better. My long allergy episode has just concluded thank god! But I know how it feels to be completely distracted.
I did manage to finish a couple books over the weekend, including Gertrude Stein. Snatched Book Thief from the bookstore and am about to start it.
Literary Feline – I have a feeling it will be a good weekend… I’ve got Half Price Books coupons! 🙂
Greer – I know, what was I thinking cleaning house on the weekend right? 🙂 Hope you check out his poetry!
tanabata – I hate cleaning and this is the perfect excuse 🙂 I’ve only read Tin House a few times – great stuff but I admit as I don’t read short stories a lot that’s probably why I’m not drawn to it as much. There was a great issue last year, all women writers, which had some very good fiction. If you can get a hold of that one I recommend it!
Kelsey – Oh then you must check this issue out! There’s a little quote of him saying, “I’ve become now this person who always has a little poem he’s working on in his pocket.” Isnt’ that great?
Isabel – Darn! That’s not a good start. Hopefully though the rest of your week gets better!
Christine – I was a total zombie! I keep thinking I need to use those little face masks but it’s so hot who can stand that! ha,ha..
Danielle – I don’t dust very much and that’s probably why it’s just too much that accumulates. ha.ha.. I’m not sure how I felt about Billy Boyle after all. I need to put some thoughts on that one.
Andi – It really is quite a steal to subscribe to it rather than buy it off the rack isn’t it! What is growing in texas that’s causing these allergies?!
Matt – Thank you. I’m feeling a bit more normal today but don’t you just hate feeling like you wasted days? Can’t wait to catch up on your reviews… I hope you love The Book Thief. Man, I think about that book and I almost start crying.
