I’ve seen several mid-year in review posts and I wanted to jump in and do one as well but then I saw this great meme on JoAnn at Gulfside Musing’s blog that I thought this is the perfect way to capture the year so far.
Six in Six is hosted by Jo of The Book Jotter, and has been around since 2012. The idea is to fit six books, authors, events, etc. from this year into each category. And, there are a lot of categories to choose from but I decided on 4.
Six new to me authors: Given that about 80% of the books I’ve read this year are by new to me authors I thought it would be easy to pick some stand-outs:
Andrea Levy, Amparo Davila, Riku Onda, Nadine Matheson, Patricia Engel, and Antoine Laurain
Six trips to Europe: Since we aren’t traveling at least let it be through books:
A Room with a View by E.M. Forster (Italy & England)
Fresh Water for Flowers by Natalie Perrin (France)
A Heart of Stone by Renate Dorrestine (The Netherlands)
Cold Granite by Stuart McBride (Scotland)
Incidents in the Rue Laugier by Anita Brookner (France & England)

Cold Granite by Stuart McBride (Scotland)

Six books that didn’t live up to expectations:
Burnt Sugar by Avni Doshi

The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult
Lurkers by Sandi Tan
Rules for Vising by Jessica Francis Kane
Real People by Alison Lurie

Six books I have read but not reviewed: I recommend all of these and hope to talk about them a bit more soon.
Hour of the Witch by Chris Bohjalian
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Mouthful of Birds by Samantha Schweblin
People We Meet on Vacation by Emily Henry

Have you done a mid-year review of your reading year? Have your reading goals changed? I’ve been enjoying a lot of great books and books from my stacks but I am falling a bit behind on some of my challenges and overall number of books I’d like to read but maybe things will pick up in the next several months. Anyway, would love to hear how your thoughts.

This is such a fun meme… so glad you decided to join in! It was a good way for me to look back on the year so far and consider what I want for the rest of the year. I’ll look forward to your thoughts on People We Meet on Vacation. I’ve been on the fence about it.
I remember you talking about some of these books before! Esp. Burnt Sugar and of course, Alchemist. And A Room with a View is an old favorite, really liked the movie with Helena Bonham Carter too.
Love your mid-year review. Every year I tell myself I should do a Six in six post, and every year I forget until I see someone else’s. Maybe I’ll finally do it next year. 🙂
Six in Six – I like it. Good way to sum up the first half of 2021.
Hi. just found your blog thru others. I have not looked back on my year … but this meme seems like a good way to do it. I’m also falling behind my reading goals a bit as the summer has been busy … but I hope to still catch up sometime. Cheers.
Thank you very much for joining in.
I am glad you recommend Hour of the Witch. I can’t believe the year is half over. I have been very happy with my reading so far this year. I hope I can keep it up! Have a great second half of the year!
Joann @ Gulfside Musing – Thank you for sharing this meme and I hope you do get to Emily Henry’s book. It was really cute!
Lex @ Lexlingua – Isn’t the movie A Room with a View so good? It’s been ages since I saw it but after reading the book this year I would love to see it again.
Lark – This was a really fun meme and need to make sure I do it next year too. Would love to see what you come up with!
Anthony Bidluka – It is right? Gives you a good idea of where your reading has taken you so far.
Susan – Thank you for visiting! I hope you do the meme and would love to see what you are reading. I don’t know if I can catch up with my reading goals but we’ll see!
Joanne D’Arcy – Thank you for hosting such a fun meme!
Literary Feline – I know, how is the year rushing by right? Hour of the Witch was really good and I think it would be a great Fall selection. Hope you are able to continue meeting your reading goals!
I like this mid-year summary. Lists, I’ve found, are my favorite sort of post. Last year, during the worst of the pandemic here, I found I wasn’t enjoying anything I read, but this year everything is reading well. Not sure why that is.
