It’s that time of the year again, Carl V.’s wonderful R.I.P. challenge is back. My track record with challenges is always iffy but there’s no way I’m missing out on joining this one. I’ve participated every year and I’m excited to see it back for the fifth year.
I’m going to try and complete the second peril which means I have to read two books between September 1 and October 31. Books can be in the genres of Mystery, Suspense, Thriller, Supernatural, Gothic, Horror and Dark Fantasy. I’ll try to stay away from counting traditional mysteries as I read those all the time anyway. I want to expand my horizons a bit more you know.
Part of the fun of joining a challenge of course is the list making right? I have quite a few books that would work for this challenge and I’m just going to choose as I read along but here are some potentials. If one of my list is a must read, let me know and I may move it up on the nightstand.
- The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. I thought The Woman in White was fabulous and think I would definitely enjoy this one.
- Noctures by John Connolly.
- Hell by Kathryn Davis. Part mystery, part domestic meditation and part horror story. Scary…
- The Leavenworth Case by Anna Katherine Green. The book which introduces the first American series detective, Ebenezer Gryce.
- 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill. I’ve actually read a couple of the stories in this collection but even if I don’t finish it all I think taking in one or more stories would be a good thing.
- Don’t Look Now by Daphne du Maurier.
I have other books, some short story collections and more classics, so I don’t think I’ll have a shortage of reading material for the challenge. All of these sound so good I want to read them all now.
So are you joining? What is one book you can’t wait to read?
I’m glad you’re joining too, Iliana! 🙂 This is one of those challenges that I wouldn’t want to miss, despite the fact that I’ve joined too many and only completed one challenge to-date, LOL.
So cool to have you back again for year 5! Great list! I mentioned elsewhere that I had never realized du Maurier was so prolific until I started hosting the RIP challenge. I’m always seeing titles of books I didn’t know existed!
If you haven’t read Wilkie Collins’ Armadale, I would definitely recommend that one too! It’s my favorite Collins. Don’t you love this challenge?!?
I enjoy The Moonstone even better than The Woman in White. Enjoy! 😀
I have been wanting to read The Moonstone too. Plus, I considered adding some du Maurier to my list as well–I have already read My Cousin Rachel and Rebecca but that’s it. In fact, I know I have another one of her books on my shelves but I have no idea which one!
Is that time already??? Must get my list done then – I’ll finally be reading Woman in White this year!
Oh, I’ve got that Du Maurier book and I totally forgot about it. I think I might have to try and slip a story or two from it with the other stories I plan on reading. I love this time of year!
I loved The Moonstone, although The Woman in White remains my favorite. I’m making a list of titles to choose from and am adding DuMaurier and Green.
Melody – Well, I haven’t completed any challenges yet so don’t feel bad 🙂 I’m glad you are joining too. It’s going to be fun!
Carl V. – Thank you so much for bringing RIP back. I think I can say the whole book blog community looks forward to it 🙂
Kristen M. – Ooh, that’s another Collins to add to my list. I do love this challenge. Have fun!
Nymeth – Oh really? Wow, I can’t wait 🙂
Stephanie – Those are the two Du Mauriers I’ve read as well and I’ve loved both so I have such expectations for this collection.
Joanna – I know, time just flew by right? So glad to hear you will join in again.
Stefanie – Doesn’t it have a great cover? I just bought that one not too long ago and I specifically remember thinking of the RIP challenge when buying it. I’m so ready for summer to be over and looking forward to fall too 🙂
jenclair – I really want to read the Green book – I keep thinking as I’m a mystery fan that should be a must read. Enjoy reading for the RIP Challenge!
Great list. Have a great time reading those.
Please do check out the books I already read for RIP V.
I like your book pool. I have 20th Centuary Ghosts as a possible too and I must get around to Nocturnes. Looking forward to your reviews.
I started 20th Century Ghosts last year, and I think I’ll finish up this year. How’s that for prolonging? lol 😀
I’m also interested in Nocturnes, and I want to try Wilkie Collins this year. Cross your fingers for me!
I’m excited that you have the Kathryn Davis on your list. I still haven’t read it, but my daughter gave me Hell for Christmas several years back.
(It tickles me to say my daughter gave me Hell for Christmas. 🙂 )
Have fun Iliana 🙂 I enjoyed 20th Century Ghosts. Looking forward to your reviews.
I’m always up for some Daphne DuMaurier; I should read your last choice with you. I’ve never read Don’t Look Now, but Rebecca will long be in my list of favorites.
gautami – Good to see you joining too! Looking forward to checking out your reviews 🙂
Rhinoa – Have you read any of 20th Century Ghosts? If I remember correctly the first story is so freakin’ spooky – it’s great!
andi – Hey me too! haha… I’m crossing my fingers for you. Hope you get to Wilkie C. Wonderful.
SFP – Love it! That is jsut too funny. I’ve been meaning to read some of Davis for a while – I want to say I heard a short story of hers on Selected Shorts and it was so interesting.
bookworm – I will! I can’t wait to read more by Joe Hill. I almost started last night but then I thought maybe not right before bedtime 🙂
Bellezza – Isn’t Rebecca wonderful? I loved My Cousin Rachel too so I have really high expectations for this one. I think it’ll be great. Have fun!
I loved Don’t Look Now–I hope you at least get a chance to read a few stories out of the collection, and The Moonstone is of course wonderful! I tend to fizzle on challenges, but this is usually the one where I can manage to read a few books–as long as I don’t set my sights too high!
This is damn tempting 🙂
It’s been so long since I joined a challenge that I nearly forgot how much fun it was to make a list, however tentative. You’ve got a great list of books there, Iliana. Good luck with the challenge.
I liked The Woman in White, too. Let us know how The Moonstone is. I read a few of the Joe Hill short stories. Am I a nerd because I was excited that he replied to one of my tweets the other day? Probably. Love DuMaurier. If I finish my two books, hers is going on the list next to see if I can finish four books.
Enjoy your selections!
I’m sinking into Daphne DuMaurier for this challenge, along with some classic spooky stories that I’ve missed over the years. The only books of hers that I’ve read are Rebecca and Frenchman’s Creek, so I’m still fumbling for which are the scariest choices, but I am already enjoying the collection named for “The Birds” which is delightfully creepy at only 60 pages in.
