I’m having so much fun with my R.I.P. reads this year. I finished The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson this weekend and while it wasn’t necessarily as super scary as I was expecting, it did have some of those supernatural elements and it fit in as a seasonal read.
Now I’m reading about Eliza Caine. She’s  just accepted a position as a governess in This House is Haunted by John Boyne.
“London, 1867… I blame Charles Dickens for the death of my father. In tracing the moment where my life transformed from serenity to horror, twisting the natural into the unspeakable, I find myself seated in the parlor of our small terraced home near Hyde Park…”
Poor Eliza Caine things have quickly gone from bad to worse for her and I’m only 100 pages in.
I have so many more books I’d love to read for this but not sure how many others I’ll get to. I did want to share a couple of links with you in case you are still trying to figure out what to read. For example, NPR posted their 100 Best Horror Novels and Stories list a few years ago. It’s still a great resource.
Recently BookPage had this article on recent books and spookiness-rated! So you’ll know if you need to read the books mentioned with the lights on! I recently mentioned This Thing Between Us in a post so I may have to start with that one next.
Finally for those of you who already have way too many books and won’t be able to add another spooky read, how about a poem that is sure to make you think twice about being home alone?
I hope you are enjoying a lot of atmospheric reads. Let me know if you’ve discovered a new favorite spooky read.
I really enjoyed that Craig Davidson story. He has a way of describing ordinary family life that I really enjoy (even in his not-mystery, not-horror writing). And I liked the, um, direction that this story went. I’ve long meant to go back to his debut, Sarah Court.
Nice update, Iliana! The books I’ve read are not necessarily spooky, though some have those elements. However, since mystery and thriller qualify, most everything I read makes the cut for RIP. I did find The Sanatorium a bit weird. Mostly a ‘people going missing at a hotel that used to be a TB sanatorium’, but a bit of the spooky elements and a huge snow event as well. Enjoy the rest of your October reading!
I enjoyed The Saturday Night Ghost Club, but I haven’t read anything else by Davidson.
I like the sound of This House is Haunted. Let me know if it ends as well as it begins!
This House is Haunted sounds really good! Glad you’re enjoying your RIP reads. I’ll have to do a wrap-up soon…
Buriedinprint – I agree. I kept thinking everyone should have an Uncle Cal. I just thought all the characters had their flaws but felt so relatable. Would love to read more by him.
Kay – I want to read The Sanatorium. That cover was so gothic-y looking wasn’t it. I’m surprised it not more spooky but I guess they were going more for the thriller. I read a lot of thrillers throughout the year too but this time of the year I love to read all things ghostly! 🙂
Jenny Mullen – Wasn’t hat so wonderful? I don’t know where I first heard about it but I got it via a Kindle deal one day and now I wish I had the physical book for my shelves as I would consider it a keeper.
Lark – It’s been really good but unfortunately I’ve just been so busy with work that I’m not reading a lot this week. Looking forward to finishing it up before Halloween!
Joann @ Gulfside Musing – It’s quite atmospheric and I really liked the intro as Charles Dickens makes an appearance! Looking forward to your wrap up post!
This House is Haunted sounds good to me! Have fun with the R.I.P. Challenge reading!
