I have finished book two of my Once Upon a Time Challenge, Artemis Fowl, so three more to go. Yikes. Artemis Fowl was had it’s moments but I wasn’t overly thrilled with it. I hope my next book in the challenge will be more to my taste.
In other challenge news, I finally started reading a chunkster. I chose The Hummingbird’s Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea. I’m enjoying this book so much. I feel like I could be sitting in my grandmother’s kitchen while she made hot chocolate and was recounting this story to me. I haven’t read anything set in Latin America in a long time and it’s just so nice to visit again.
As far as Don Quixote, well, let’s just say my plan to read about 50 pages a week hasn’t gotten off to a very good start. I’m only at page 45 but what I’ve read so far I’ve liked. I plan to continue just at a slow pace obviously.
I’m also reading another Inspector Banks novel, Innocent Graves, which is the eighth book in the series. I still have a ways to go before I catch up as there are 16 books in the series.
I’m off to read some more before going to sleep. Oh but which book do I read this evening? Such difficult decisions. Heh.
You need 8 eyes and many brains to read everything in your library.
Timely reminder for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. I’m still not done with 2 of my books!
I tried reading “The HummingbirdΓ’β¬β’s Daughter” last year – but it was just too thick to plow through. Hope you’re having fun with it.
Know exactly how it feels sometimes, trying to decide which book to read. Really difficult to make choices like this. Everytime you choose one, you’re neglecting the others.
Every morning before I go to work, I sit in my room and wonder: which book should I take with me today? *sigh*
I’m about to kick out with a book before I call it a night. I’ve been *thinking* about reading all day, but now I’m actually gonna do it for a bit. lol
Sorry to hear Artemis Fowl didn’t blow your skirt up. I’ve heard pretty mixed reviews on that one.
I hope to get to Artemis Fowl at some point, I’ve heard a lot of good reviews. It does sound like a book I’d enjoy.
I really ought to get round to reading Don Quixote at some point…possibly not this year though, I have a lot to get through as it is!
I liked the first Artemis book the best. I should “unofficially” do some of these challenges. I bought four used paperbacks at the bookstore last week. Book Therapy is the best. LOL!
I think reading slowly is just fine — why rush through something as great as Don Quixote? π
I’m curious about Artemis Fowl, but you’re not the first person to say it’s enjoyable but not entirely satisfying. I should get around to reading it some day.
I’d love to hear what you think of The Hummingbird’s Daughter–I thought it looked good, too. As for DQ–I read it on the bus to work every morning. I usually get in about ten pages or so–so it is slow going, but it seems to work out okay.
Isabel – Isn’t that the truth!
Dark Orpheus – Hummingbird is a chunkster for sure. And, I know, it’s so sad to neglect the other books isn’t it.
Andi – What did you end up choosing? Yep, I don’t think I’ll continue w/the Artemis series.
Quixotic – It seems that a lot of people do like Artemis. I like that he’s an anti-hero I just wish there had been a bit more to the story.
Nancy – You should! I’m all about the book therapy π
Dorothy W. – You are absolutely right!
Nymeth – You’ll have to let me know what you think of it if you read it.
Danielle – So far Hummingbird is wonderful. You are so good about carrying DQ w/you. I should do that and it may help build some muscle π
Keep on with all that reading — you are managing pretty darn well there.
Some books just have to be read slowly…. π
The Hummingbird’s Daughter sounds like a fascinating book. Wouldn’t have heard of it if it weren’t for your post. It’s sad to think about how many interesting books are out there that I’ll never hear about… Looking forward to your thoughts on it!
I tried to read Artemis Fowl once but couldn’t get into it so put it down before I reached page 30. Your remaining three books are all quite good. I can hardly wait to hear what you think of them!
iliana, I’m tagging you for the 8 Things meme. The details are on my blog (no obligation if you don’t feel like it!)
Christine – That’s a good point π
Matt – Oh I know isn’t that sad? Well so far Hummingbird is turning out to be a great saga.
Stefanie – I know I can’t either! I don’t know which one to pick next π
jenclair – thank you for tagging me. I’ll post it soon. I’ll have to think of some fascinating stuff about me.ha,ha..
The Hummingbird’s Daughter sounds really interesting. It sounds like a very ‘cozy read for you. I wanted to tell you, that I put the Beatrix Lehmann virago book you posted about on my paperbackswap wishlist and it became available the next day! I’m glad you mentioned it since I hadn’t heard of her previously.
Tara – That is great! I wanted to find a description of the book online but I couldn’t find one at all. The back cover though makes it sounds very good.
I chose The New Yorkers: A Novel, by Cathleen Schine. The publisher sent it along for review, and once I got into it, I loooved it!
I couldn’t stand that brat Artemis Fowl in the first book. I found him to be almost devoid of humanity. But, I gave the others a shot when I saw that the author had been encouraged to continue with the series. I find that he gets to be more interesting and likable as the series progresses.
It looks like you’ve got quite a list of books going. Good luck with all of your challenges. I’m avoiding all challenges at the moment, but I’m not sure how much longer I can hold out.
Andi – Yay, no more reading block π
jmfausti – Ah well that is interesting that he becomes more likable. I did like the idea that he was going to be a criminal but I think the first book was just too focused on the action. Which, I guess I can understand as it is for young readers but it didn’t do much for me. On challenges… well, I try not to give in but I can’t resist them π
