January was a great reading month for me and I finished nine books but February was definitely a slower month. I only finished four books (one of those a graphic novel). But, what’s really important for me is that I feel like my reading has been a bit more inclusive.
So far, I’ve been reading more short stories and poetry. I try to read one short story and/or one poem a week. And, along with the usual fiction reads, I’ve also read a couple of graphic novels, a memoir, two books in translation, some mysteries and even a science fiction book. I hope this trend continues.
Regarding challenges, I did finish the Japanese Reading Challenge and I’ve made a small dent into the 9 for 09 Reading Challenge. I’m still reading the first book in the Latin American Reading Challenge, but all the others are just waiting for me to dive in. Well, there’s still plenty of time so we’ll see what happens.
Right now I’m still finishing some books I started in February and after that so many books from my shelves look tempting who knows what March will bring.
How about you? How’s your reading going so far this year?
My reading isn’t going too badly so far this year. I finished 5 books in both January and February, and completed the JLit Challenge and the Well-Read Challenge. I have some challenges that I haven’t even started yet but like you said, there’s still time.
I felt like my Feb. reading was kind of paltry, too, but even though I didn’t finish many books, I read a lot of essays.
I really like that you described your reading as inclusive; that’s a goal of mine too, but I hadn’t come up with such a good way to put it. 🙂
My reading is finally slowing down, but since it’s been in overdrive since the new year began, I don’t mind. 🙂
I have been trying to slow down and really enjoy my reading – it’s hard when all I keep thinking is “there are too many books and not enough time to read them in”. I would like to spend this month planning my reading for the year a little more so that I get value for money!
I did some great reading in February. I need to spend some time now writing in my book log and getting it all blogged. I’m really looking forward to March, I’ve got a couple things to finish up and I’m expecting a few goodies in the mail.
Not very well unfortunately. But I’m really hoping things will pick up soon. I found a great book at the library (Cooking & Screaming) and I think it’s going to get me out of my slump.
My reading slowed down in February too, and that’s largely because the semester got underway — that does put a dent in my reading time, unfortunately!
It feels slow, but when I look I realize I read five books in February, and one was 800 pages. I guess that’s not bad! I think I just see the TBR pile and think I’m going so slowly I’ll never get through it all!
tanabata – That well-read challenge sounds like a lot of fun. I have the book 1001 Books You Must Read so I should give that one a go! Hope you have another great month 🙂
Carrie K. – Ooh essays, see that’s one “genre” I don’t get to at all. Well, there’s always March to boost up our numbers, right? 🙂
Eva – You read so much and with your World citizen challenge I’ve no doubt your reading will be very inclusive 🙂
Karen – Totally! I sometimes wonder what’s the rush? But, I think it’s because that’s the danger of reading too many book blogs. Everyone is always talking about such interesting books it’s kind of hard not to want to rush and move on.
Melanie – Yay! Looking forward to your book reviews. I know when it comes to those I definitely fall behind. And, what goodies did you get in the mail? I got some recently too but I’ll have to save that for another post 🙂
nik – You are still having a reading slump girl? I hope your new book gets you out of it. Cooking & Screaming – sounds like the story of my life in the kitchen – ha!
Dorothy W. – I can imagine! I don’t even know why my reading slowed down. I haven’t been reading “bigger” or more “difficult” books. Odd. Oh well, that’s how it goes sometimes.
priscilla – Ooh 800 pages I say counts as 2 books at least! hee. Yea, my TBR pile is really bad so I’m sure that doesn’t help either.
Impressive! My reading is going well, I suppose, but between class, reviews and challenges, I always feel as if I’m a bit behind. 😛 At least I’m reading some good stuff!
I love that your reading was inclusive! I’ve read a lot so far this year, but my reviewing has been a little laggy. Ah well, I’ll try to catch up, but I’m not going to beat myself up if I don’t review everything 🙂
My reading really slowed down in Feb. too! Not sure why.
Tiffany – Reading good stuff makes up for any slow month in my book 🙂 Hope you have another good one in March!
Gentle Reader – Oh, I definitely don’t review everything I read either. I’m always getting behind and well that’s just the way it goes sometimes, right? 🙂
Tara – aha, I’m not the only one. Let’s blame it on Feb. being a short month 🙂
My reading slowed some in February, too. Strange because I read more fiction, and fiction moves so much faster than nonfiction.
Sounds like you are doing very well on all of your challenges!
I haven’t joined any challenge officially although I’m very mindful of a couple. I’ve got my own agenda to read black literature last month. I ended up reading Beloved, Sula, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Another Country and And This Also Shall Pass.
This month I’ve got Gone with the Wing read-along, and I plan to read some ARCs along the way. I’ll save all the books that I lust after for my vacation to Hawaii in April. The Piano Teacher by Janice Lee is one of the books.
You read my mind (pun intended) … I was just getting ready to do a post on my reading progress this year!
jenclair – Oh that is interesting. You are right, fiction seems to go “faster” than non-fiction for me too.
Matt – Ok, first, I’m jealous about a vacation in Hawaii! 🙂 I think it’s wonderful that you are doing the read-along. I hope that goes really well and if you do another I may just have to join in. I hear you on the personal reading plans. I’m doing some challenges but tried not to go overboard like last year! haha…
Betty & Boo’s Mommy – Hee,hee… I can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to!
Congrats on completing the challenge! I did pretty good in Feb., but I’ve spent the last 2 weeks on the same book. It’s a good one, and it’s 560 some pages long, but it still feels like I’m crawling at a snail’s pace. I have less than 100 pages left!
