Thank you guys for all the get well vibes. My cold is almost gone and I’m feeling better aside from being a bit tired, of course it doesn’t help that work has been very busy. I think what I miss most are my yoga classes which I haven’t been too as I’ve been so congested but I’m hoping I can start back up tomorrow.
Anyway, I did go to book club last night and we had lots to discuss over a book which for the most part got thumbs down (from me too). Isn’t it funny how sometimes the books you like least are the ones that you end up talking about the most? At least that always seems to be the case in my experience.
What book did we talk about? All Our Yesterdays by Robert B. Parker. The story was a multigenerational saga of love, betrayal and violence. I didn’t like a single character and thought there were too many cliches but again, go figure that we almost ran out of time to discuss this one.
We did make some other selections for the upcoming months and we’ll be reading: Fieldwork by Mischa Berlinski, The Case of the Missing Servant by Tarquin Hall (I’m currently reading this one actually), and Nobody Move by Denis Johnson. Have you read any of these?
So, slowly getting back in to the swing of things here at Casa Bookgirl.
Glad you’re getting back in the swing. I’m just getting over my cold-turned-bronchitis, and I can’t wait to be normal again.
I’m chuckling at how the books that everyone hates generally inspires so much chatter. That is how it works for our book club too! I HAVE read Fieldwork, pre-blogging, and I loved it. I just started a new book club, one that is more “literary”, and I’m pretty excited about it. WE have a great group of people who are passionate about reading. Our first selection is the newest John Irving book…
Andi – Me too 🙂 Sending you good health vibes too!
Sandy – Isn’t that funny? And, the weird thing is not so much that we are panning the book but I guess there’s more to discuss about how we would change things or I don’t know. You had your meeting with your lit society right? Can’t wait to hear about it!
I hate that you’ve not been feeling well. Sometimes it takes a lot longer to get your energy back.
I just picked up a Robert Parker I hadn’t read before – Hush Money.
I’ll be interested as to what you think of the Tarquin Hall. It was a funr ead.
Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better. Colds can knock you out for quite awhile.
I’ve been sick too and am so far behind in my commenting. I’m glad you are feeling better now. I will come across your post at some point that explains you are sick.
Good to hear that you are feeling better :o)
I have not read any of the books you mention!
I think if there is a lot of things you disliked in a book, it would make for a good discussion!
jenn – Aw, thank you! Hope you enjoy the Parker book. I’ll be looking for your review and I’m close to the end of the Hall book and it’s wonderful! By the way, definitely want to meet up with you if you come for the Texas Book Festival! I was just checking out the line up and there are going to be some great authors coming. So exciting.
vivienne – They definitely do that don’t they. I’m definitely feeling much better and am ready to get on with stuff 🙂
Kathleen – Oh I’m sorry to hear that hun! I hope you feel better soon too. I just had a cold which I’m sure I caught from the stale plane air! Ugh. One of the things I don’t like about traveling that’s for sure. Take care of you!
Veens – Thank you! So far I can say the Hall book is great. I should be done with it soon so I promise to have a review 🙂
I’ve not read any of those mysteries, but the Berlinski sounds especially interesting. I noticed that as well when I was in a book group–books that we didn’t necessarily like seemed to have the best discussions!
