So today was my last day at work. Now it becomes more clear why I didn’t want to come back from vacation right? Heh. It’s okay, it wasn’t a surprise. I work in human resources so I was actually one of the last ones to go and I’ve known about the layoff since the start of the year.
Do I have a new job? Nope. I’m going to take some time off and enjoy it. Granted that’s a bit scary because I have so many projects and things I want to do that I’m almost overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. I’m sure I’ll use up some of the extra time with reading but I’m looking forward to spending time on bookbinding projects and taking crafty classes. I guess this means I also have no excuses for not going the gym more often do I?
It did feel a bit odd to walk out today and to know that I don’t have to go back. I didn’t feel like coming straight home and so I ended up at the library. I figured being surrounded by books was bound to help and it did. I spent a nice afternoon reading. You know, the library could be my new office. They have free wireless hotspot, a cafe and plenty of comfy couches and new books. I’ll let you know how that works out.
I like your attitude! Hey, you can be like Diane Keaton in Baby Boom. Um, sans baby! 🙂
Well, you now have more time on your hands for your favourite pursuits like your books, reading clubs and crafty things. Get back to yoga, girl! And enjoy this break cause you’ll soon be back at work with all its stresses and a fixed number of leave days a year. 😀
Now about that library – if you go freelance, that could be a VERY good office option although I think for you, a very BIG distraction too. 😛
Enjoy the time off. 🙂 I find the library very soothing!
It certainly helps to get ready for it when you know so far in advance.
Enjoy your time.
Enjoy your time off. Hanging out in the library sounds like a nice plan!
Welcome to the world of unemployment! It’s fabulous.
I’m sorry that you won’t be working at the job any more but it does sound like you’ve got a list of things you’re ready to fill your time with. It is great that you don’t immediately have to find a job and I wonder if you will turn some of your outside interests (the book binding and crafts) into a Etsy or something of the like. I’ll be staying tuned to find out if your new office works out for you! 🙂
Enjoy your time off – when I moved to MN I took more than 2 months off (though it was by choice) – I still remember that time fondly. It’s rare that adults get a ‘break’ . The library sounds like a great office.
You might find that you are busier than before as you try to find time for all of the things you enjoy — without the interference of work! I’d love to take a bookbinding class. Will await your new adventures with bated breath. (
Congratulations on this new chapter in your life! Have fun with your projects and reading. Can’t wait to hear what’s next!
Maggie – Gotta stay positive right? I haven’t seen Baby Boom… Hey now I have time to see more movies 🙂
Kisane – Yoga is the one thing I really need to get better at. My gym offers a couple of classes during the week so I need to check them out. And, yes the library could be a dangerous thing – hee.
Eva – Thanks! I agree, it’s such a comforting place.
Marg – It does. I was over the shock a long time ago so it was nice to think about what my options were.
Tanabata – My local library is awesome so I definitely plan to visit a lot during my time off.
aka Nik – Hee,hee. I’ll see if I can’t talk my husband into letting me be a woman of leisure indefinitely 😉
Heather – I’ve toyed with the idea of an Etsy store but I tend to work very slowly. I don’t know if I’d end up making any money. Then again, it would still be fun I imagine. More food for thought that’s for sure!
Tara – Thank you. In between jobs I usually try to take a month off. I agree, it’s so rare that adults get a real break that we might as well as take advantage of it.
jenclair – I think that’s going to be the case! I’m excited. I’ve been looking into some classes and I’ll keep you guys posted on what I find 🙂
Tiffany – Thank you! I plan to enjoy the time and not worry about the next job. That will come in time.
Take care of yourself.
Pox on the MBAs who don’t know how to manage a company.
Hey, I just saw the announcement for the National Novel Writing Month for November.

Well….there are worse things in life! My husband got laid off about 9 months ago. He’s working at a place making 1/2 of what he did before. But I can tell you this….he’s a whole lot happier! I, myself, am looking for a job too!! I should have gone to school to be a librarian!! THAT would have made me so happy!
So sorry to hear about your job. At least it wasn’t a surprise and you’ve been able to plan for it. Enjoy your time off!
Great attitude you have there, and you’ll be perfectly fine. The time off will be great for your bookish, crafty soul. 🙂
You have such a positive attitude and that is what matters most! You know, when it comes to that time, it never feels like you think it will.
Can’t wait to see what transpires during this time off. I think you are going to surprise yourself with all kinds of wonderful.
Enjoy being a woman of leisure. It is SO deserved. Great things will be waiting for you when you are ready to start work again.
Well, I hope you enjoy your time off, and that when you’re ready for a new job, the perfect one will come along!
Sorry about the layoff, but nice you can take time before finding a new job. Enjoy!
I agree with Andi. You have a marvelous attitude about this and a bit of a break will be a blessing in the long run. Hey, you can always hang out in Barnes & Noble. Great atmosphere with yummy coffee and treats, not to mention all those books. 😉
Isabel – I tried doing NaNo one time and gave up after the second day! I guess that’s not for me 🙂
Stephanie – Oh man that is hard but glad your husband is doing something he enjoys much better. In the past six years I’ve been laid off twice and I guess now it’s just become a daily occurrence in Corporate America that I’m not as shocked anymore. Sad isn’t it.
Danielle – Thank you! I will definitely try to enjoy it.
Andi – I hope you are right. I think if will do wonders for me. I did like my job but I admit the crafty stuff really makes me super happy. It’ll be nice to indulge in that.
Christine – Thank you so much girl. I really took to heart some of the advice you shared with me earlier this week. I will put off thinking about a new job until I’m ready 🙂
Dorothy W. – Ah, thank you. I hope that’s the case!
Stefanie – Yes, I’m in a good place that I can enjoy the time off so I might as well enjoy it right.
Les in NE – Ooh, I think hanging out at B&N would be ideal too. And, they have Starbucks! Maybe I should even apply for a job there 🙂
You have such a great attitude, I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time and fill it wisely. Have fun!
Time off sounds like a good idea. It’s great that you can do that. 🙂 I am sorry about the layoff, but at least it didn’t come as a total surprise. And you definitely have a positive attitude about it.
i know you’ll grab the time to do everything you’ve always wanted to do but always complain “i don’t have the time” (woah, what a sentence). gym included 😉
I’m inbetween jobs too, Iliana. I figured this was a great time to try really hard for a job in a bookstore or publishing house…something I might not have done if I had stayed on in my previous place of work. The best of luck.I hope you enjoy your time off and when you are ready for work, I hope you find something you enjoy.
Nancy, aka Bookfool – Thank you! I think knowing for so long that it was coming helped me adjust to it.
Literary Feline – It is! I’m so grateful that I am able to do that.
aloi – Ha,ha… Isn’t that the truth! There’s never enough time.
Lotus – Best of luck to you as well! That’s wonderful that this has given you the push to look for something you’d really like. I have thought about looking for some p/t work in a bookstore. I figure with the holidays coming up that may be something I can easily find. I’ll keep you guys posted 🙂
HA! Illiana – I’m not laughing at you, I’m laughing WITH you. I got laid off on Monday. So, I guess you will be my new bookish BFF. I will blog about my new unemployed life soon. Happy reading eh? Thank God the library is free. teehee…
I would spend lots of time at a library like that. I hope you enjoy your time off between jobs.
Sheri – I guess we should form a club right? 🙂 Yes, the library is becoming my new haven!
Nancy – I plan to do just that 🙂
That’s the upside to unemployment, you can finally get around to all those lingering projects! I discovered that after I lost my job in February. 🙂
