Discoveries

I was at Barnes & Noble today at lunch and discovered all kinds of goodies.

Monica Ali has a new book. I really want to read it after having enjoyed Brick Lane and it’s set in Portgual. I really want to go to Portugal. I also saw this book. I know it’s chick lit but it sounds promising doesn’t it?

Then I found Fine Books & Collections magazine. I had never seen it before but I think I’m in love. There is an article about Margaret Atwood’s autograph machine, some interviews with book collectors and even the ads are interesting. I can’t wait to read it cover to cover.

As if all that wasn’t enough when I got home I had a package from my friend Isabel. She sent me two Muriel Spark books as I couldn’t seem to find any in Dallas! I now have A Far Cry from Kensington and The Bachelors. Both look delicious.

Summer Reading Update

My Summer Reading Challenge is going well. I’ve read 6 books and have been strong in my conviction to only read books from my stacks, which is a very hard thing to do given that I drive by the public library every day.

What have I read?
Deep Blue Alibi by Paul Levine
A Necessary End by Peter Robinson
Death at Bishop’s Keep by Robin Paige
Death at Gallow’s Green by Robin Paige
Death at Daisy’s Folly by Robin Paige
N.P. by Banana Yoshimoto

I didn’t realize they were practically all mysteries with the exception of N.P. Perhaps that’s why I’ve read more books than I had expected. I find mysteries to be really fast reads.

Now it’s time to for some general fiction. I still haven’t finished reading The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and as I put it aside for so long I may have to restart reading it.

A Good Mystery

So what comfort books did I read last week? I was lucky to have discovered a new mystery series set in the 1800s in England, Death at Bishop’s Keep is the first in the series by Robin Paige. I’m sure you’ve heard me say before how much I love novels set in Victorian times and this one did not disappoint.

It has a feisty heroine who writes penny-dreadfuls, a Lord who spends his free time learning about photography and oh yes, a murder. Isn’t it odd that I find murder mysteries to be my comfort reads?

I’ve loved Victoria Thompson’s Gaslight Mystery series and am anxiously awaiting the latest book. Actually it’s out but as I’m staying away from the library for the summer I can’t get it yet. Talk about a real test, besides once I read it I’ll have to wait a whole other year for another book. I need to pace myself.

I have also read a couple of the Anne Perry Thomas Pitt mysteries and found them enjoyable although the characters haven’t grown on me as much as Thompson’s characters have.

So my question dear readers is, have I missed any other mysteries set in Victorian times? If so please let me know because I must get them.
