Growing Up

I’ve been having a lot of fun hanging out with my cousin this weekend. We made the obligatory trip to the mall (she’s 18) and lucky for me she’s also a bookworm.

When she was in her early teens she was reading books by Lurlene McDaniel. I think all of these romances involve someone dying. Nothing says love like teen angst I guess.

Now that she’s older she’s moved away from YA novels and was looking at books in the fiction & literature section. As she saw two rows filled with The Notebook she turned to me and said, “I think this author wants to be like a Lurlene McDaniel for adults.”

I thought that was quite cute. She said she wasn’t into those books anymore but then I noticed she had her arms full of chick-lit books. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still read chick-lit every once in a while but maybe I should sneak in some other kind of book in her pile don’t you think?

This & That

Aren’t these page markers great? I need them.

Also how about joining an Audio book club? Check out Renee’s great new idea for discussing books. She’s picked an Ishiguro novel for her first read (yeah!).

After saying, “No. Thank you,” for so long, I finally caved and am now a Barnes Noble member. This means book shopping will take place this weekend.

I hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. My cousin, who is another bookworm, is coming to visit us this weekend. I can’t wait to see her.

Currently Reading

Here are some of the books that are currently on my nightstand:

Transgressions by Sarah Dunant. This book is a bit unnerving to say the least. There’s a stalker, a big house and a lonely woman. Read it with the lights on.

The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G.Wells. I didn’t know anything about this book aside from the fact that it was science fiction but I am surprised at how much I’m enjoying it. I think I’ll finish this on time for the Slaves discussion.

The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards. I can see why this is the book of the summer as some people have been calling it. Family secrets, guilt and regrets make this an interesting read.

Past Reason Hated by Peter Robinson. A good whodunit so far marks this fifth novel in the Inspector Banks series.

I should be done with a couple of these books very soon. Who knows I may even stay up late tonight and finish one. After all, there’s a thunderstorm going on right now that’s likely to keep me awake all night.
