Night at the Library

Do you have a library card? If not, remember that September is National Library Card Sign Up Month. Our library is having a drawing for a gift certificate to Amazon for those who apply. Grrr, how come I can’t enter that? I think I should apply for a new card and sign up as Bookgirl. Don’t you think?

Anyway, want to know what I checked out? Here’s the pile:

Saturday by Ian McEwan for next month’s foreign authors book group meeting

Journal: The Short Life and Mysterious Death of Amy Zoe Mason by Kristine Atkinson which I practically finished reading at the check out line. You can read my little review here.

The Lives of Shadows: An Illustrated Novel by Barbara Hodgson.

Adiós Hemingway by Leonardo Padura Fuentes.

And, I also got the latest Booksense because I guess I need more books to add to my TBR list.

Books On My Radar

Our book group night was a great success. We nominated 40 books so it will be hard to narrow down the list to 11 books. We’ll find out next month which books made the cut.

So while I was busy looking for books to nominate, I also found a lot of new Fall books that I have added to my TBR list. Here are some of the books that caught my attention:

The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas – One reviewer said it is reminiscent of The Shadow of the Wind, which I loved, so it goes on my list.

What is Mine by by Anne Holt – A Scandinavian thriller set in Norway. I’m always on the look out for new mysteries.

The Meaning of Night by Michael Cox – It’s a story about a 19th century book lover, scholar and murderer. It sounds good to me.

Paint it Black by Janet Fitch – I really liked White Oleander so I’m curious to see how her latest novel compares.

Girls in Peril by Karen Lee Boren – A coming of age story.

How about you? Which Fall books are you looking forward to?

I compiled these and many more titles from Booksense, Discover Great New Writers and Pages Magazine.

Choices

Thank you for the suggestions on foreign fiction. I have narrowed down my nomination choices for my Foreign Authors book group to: A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian by Marina Lewycka, A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry, The Night Watch by Sarah Waters and Small Island by Andrea Levy. I can’t wait to see what others will nominate.

I had planned to get a lot of reading done this weekend but I was suffering from allergies quite a bit so I spent a lot of time in a haze. I hate that. Needless to say I’m already behind on the R.I.P. challenge. I still can’t decide which creepy book to start next.

So short post tonight but I’ll be back tomorrow to let you know how the book nomination night went.
