Copies

I was in the library. I was looking for Jane Eyre and found almost a whole shelf of copies. It was the collection of a fanatic: There were cheap, modern copies, with no secondhand value; editions that came up so rarely on the market it would be hard to put a price to them; copies that fell at every point between these two extremes.
Excerpt from The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield.

Does anyone have a collection like that? If so what book do you have to have many copies of? As much as I love buying books I’ve never really given much thought to owning several editions of one book.

Anyway, today was a great day for reading. I definitely made more headway into The Thirteenth Tale, which is also a great choice for my third book of the R.I.P. Challenge. I also finished The Black Book by Ian Rankin and Little Women by Louisa May Alcott.

Checked Out

Instead of spending the evening at home and catching up on my reading I went to the library for a good browse, and here’s what I checked out:

Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie. This is the November pick for my foreign authors book group.

She Got Up Off the Couch by Haven Kimmel. I really enjoyed Zippy so I want to read more of Haven’s adventures.

Still Life by Louise Penny. This is the first of a new mystery series set in Canada.

In Lucia’s Eyes by Arthur Japin. Story about a servant girl in 18th century Europe. Salons, the Enlightment and even Casanova are all a part of this novel.

How Elizabeth Barrett Browning Saved My Life by Mameve Medwed. With a title like, and the jacket blurb stating it’s a novel for those who enjoy flea markets and Antiques Roadshow I couldn’t pass it up.

I want to read all the books but let’s not make any bets on how many I actually read before having to return them. Sigh.

Currently I’m reading The Black Book by Ian Rankin and The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. Good stuff.

P.S. Don’t forget to visit the Online Book Fair. Lesley was one of the lucky winners yesterday.

Book Group Night

My Foreign Authors book group spent the evening in spirited discussion over Saturday by Ian McEwan. Was is a book about humanity, happiness, a world in turmoil? All of the above? After having said on several occasions that I wasn’t feeling connected to the character I realize I might have given the impression that I didn’t like the book.

While it’s not a book I might gush about it has really grown on me. I’ve thought about it quite a bit since I finished it and you can read more of my thoughts about it in my little review here.

We also have our list of books to read for 2007. Here it is:

I’ve been interested in most of these books so I say that’s quite a good list. In the meantime our November book is Shalimar the Clown by Salman Rushdie. I’ll be picking that up at the library this week.
