Making Lists

I didn’t make it to my foreign authors book group tonight as I didn’t finish Half of a Yellow Sun. I’m still planning to finish it though because so far it’s really good. Next month we are reading Madame by Antoni Libera so hopefully I’ll be more organized and get it read in time.

Today I’ve been making book lists. Thanks to Estella’s Revenge (new issue is up so check it out!), Mystery Scene and BookPage I’ve added some titles to my list. I’m sure I’ll go back to all of these sources for more but in the meantime here’s what I got:

And, TBR lists aren’t the only lists I’m making. Danielle passed me the baton and I get to put together some options for the next Slaves of Golconda book. We’ve read some very good stories, and actually you can still join in on the discussion of The Stone Angel over at the MetaxuCafe Forums. It’s been great.

In the next couple of days I plan to have some choices up for a vote so hope you’ll think about joining in. Right now I’m thinking of taking everyone on a trip through latin america and reading some contemporary authors. It’s not all magical realism you know. heh.

Book Group Night

Tonight was my Murder on Mondays book group night and we met to discuss Dope by Sara Gran. Like I expected most of the group didn’t enjoy the book all that much. I think the main problem was that we expected a mystery and this was not one. You can read more of my thoughts on the book here.

That’s two books in a row we’ve read that have not been real standouts so hopefully next month we’ll have better luck when we meet to discuss Real Murders by Charlaine Harris. I’m looking forward to our May book which is What Angels Fear by C.S. Harris. I’ve had that book on my TBR stack for at least a year!

I also posted my review on A Great Deliverance by Elizabeth George (click on the title). Loved it and it also happens to be my third book for the First in a Series Challenge.

Finally, to end this night with still more mystery flair I’ve got the latest Mystery Scene on my nightstand. On the cover is Minette Walters, another crime writer I really enjoy. If you’ve never read her books I recommend The Sculptress. Creepy.

Catching Up

This weekend has been about spending time with my books. That means putting the new ones that I bought at the sale in stacks (I’ve run out of shelf space), going to the bookstore for coffee and a short browse, and of course reading. I feel like I hardly did any reading last week. So strange.

Anyway now to do a bit of catch up on some things. First, I want to thank Imani for hosting the Outmoded Authors Challenge. Unfortunately, I only read one book, Journal of a Solitude, out of the three I had selected but I did love the book and have found a new author as a result of that. The challenge will be back in September so maybe next time I’ll do better.

Speaking of challenges, I just found out about a Novella Challenge that Trish is hosting. Isn’t that cool? I’m thinking about it but then I see all my other challenges. I’m actually doing pretty well on those and need to update some of my books read so stay tuned for that.

So, what have I been reading this weekend? Well, I’m halfway through The View from Castle Rock which I’m reading for A Curious Singularity. I am still very behind on Half of a Yellow Sun because I picked up a very good mystery. I wanted to finish Half of a Yellow Sun for book group on Tuesday but I don’t think that’s going to happen. Ah well, we’ll see.
