Weekly Geeks – Catch Up

wg4.jpgThis week’s Weekly Geeks theme is to catch up on… something. I feel like lately I’m always catching up so this week’s theme fits me perfectly.

First I want to catch up on an award that was given to me by Mrs. B of The Insatiable Reader and Nicole from Book Escape. They shared with me the “I Love Your Blog” award (thank you ladies!) and now the best part is that I get to share this with some of my favorite bloggers.

I present this to:

love+your+blog.jpgDanielle of A Work in Progress
Isabel of Books and Other Stuff
Melody of Melody’s Reading Corner
Stephanie of Stephanie’s Written Word
Gentle Reader of Shelf Life
Ann of Table Talk
Andi of Tripping Toward Lucidity

Now, what else am I going to catch up on this week? Well, bloghopping has become something I have to catch up on a constant basis. I’m not alone in that right?

Next up on my list is that I hope to catch up on book reviews. I’ve read my two books for Carl’s R.I.P. challenge (they were so good) and am actually trying to finish up another. I also want to post two reviews for a giveaway I’m hosting at the end of this week so please be sure to drop in and enter the giveaway. I’ll give you a hint, if you love historical fiction you won’t want to miss this.

Finally, I just want to catch up on my reading. I’ve got piles of books I can’t wait to read. One which I haven’t started is Ruth Hall by Fanny Fern. This is the next book for the Slaves of Golconda discussion and I get the feeling I’m going to be super late to that discussion. Oh man, I need a 48 hour day, don’t you?

Alright, off to get started on those piles of books.

A Book Meme

I can’t pass up a good book meme and I saw this one on Matt’s blog so I had to snag it.

On your nightstand now: My Lady of Cleves by Margaret Campbell Barnes, Capote in Kansas by Kim Powers, Fanny Fern by Ruth Hall and Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie.

Book you’ve “faked” reading: The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. I never read this one in high school or college but I feel as if I know the whole story.

Book you’ve bought for the cover: Ooh so many books capture my attention just from the cover or title alone. I can’t think of a recent book but I am sure I picked up The Bookshop by Penelope Fitzgerald because of the cover (a bookshop!) and the title. I was sure I wouldn’t be let down by this book and I wasn’t. It was wonderful and I highly recommend it.

Favorite book when you were a child: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst.

Book that changed your life: What a tough question. I can’t say that a book necessarily changed my life but many of them have given me insight, comfort and joy. I think what’s life changing is learning to read and growing to love books.

Favorite line from a book: “To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband’s dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor.” from Silent in the Grave by Deanna Raybourn. I thought that was a great opening.

Top five favorite authors: Sandra Cisneros, David Sedaris, Margaret Atwood, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carol Shields. (Ask me tomorrow and my list might be different).

Books you recommend as regeneration when people say, “I’m bored by almost all contemporary American writers”: The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver, The History of Love by Nicole Krauss.

Book you can’t believe that everyone has not read and loved: Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson.

Book you are an “evangelist” for: The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Book you most want to read for the first time: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I loved this book and I still get a bit emotional when I think of it.

Fun, Fun, Fun

There wasn’t a lot of time for reading or checking emails/blogs this weekend but that’s okay because my girlfriends and I had a blast.

We started off the day on Saturday with a good breakfast at Trudy’s, one of my favorite spots in Austin. I remember hanging out there a lot back in my college days. From there we went down to South Congress avenue where it’s filled with a lot of one-of-a-kind shops. We wandered around vintage clothes, unique home decor items and pretty trinkets.

I was thrilled to find some sheets of paper at Ten Thousand Villages and Tesoros. The one with the hearts is stamped lotka paper from India and the mint-y color one is from Bangladesh. Do you see the flecks of paper in that one? Those are bits from newspapers and other printed materials. Aren’t these beautiful? I already have some books in mind that I want to make with these.

We had some coffee breaks and we wandered the aisles at BookPeople. It was so nice to laugh and just spend time with my friends. I can’t wait until our next meet-up.

And, just in case you are wondering if there was any reading done this weekend — Well, of course there was. I am greatly enjoying My Lady of Cleves by Margaret Campbell Barnes. Stay tuned for a review and a giveaway at the end of the week!

Now it looks like once again I’m way behind on my blog reading so forgive me but I hope to catch up with you soon.
