Book Giveaway: The Shape of Mercy

Hope everyone is recovering from the read-a-thon. I read a total of 10 hours so I’m pretty happy with that. Today, I’ve done no reading though as I’ve had some stuff to take care of but I wanted to tell you about the giveaway I have this week:

shapeofmercy.jpgThe Shape of Mercy by Susan Meissner has been getting a lot of attention around the blogosphere. I have a copy waiting for me but the publishers were kind enough to send me an extra for a giveaway.

Here’s a bit about the book:

“We understand what we want to understand.”

Leaving a life of privilege to strike out on her own, twenty-year-old Lauren Durough breaks with her family’s expectations and takes a part-time job from eight-three-year-old librarian Abigail Boyles, who asks Lauren to transcribe the journal entries of Mercy Hayworth, a victim of the Salem witch trials.

Immediately, Lauren finds herself drawn to this girl who lived and died four centuries ago. As the fervor around the witch accusations increases, Mercy becomes trapped, unable to fight the overwhelming influence of snap judgments and superstitions. Lauren realizes that the secrets of Mercy’s story extend beyond the pages of her diary, living on in the mysterious, embittered Abigail.

The strength of her affinity with Mercy forces Lauren to take a startling new look at her own life, including her relationships with Abigail, her college roommate, and a young man named Raul. But on the way to the truth, will Lauren find herself playing the helpless defendant or the misguided judge? Can she break free from her own perceptions and see who she really is?

Sounds great doesn’t it? If you are interested in the book, leave me a comment and I’ll draw a name by this Friday. Thanks and good luck!

Read-A-Thon Wrap-up

Good morning everyone! Well, I didn’t get to do the whole Read-A-Thon as I had to get to sleep around 1:30 but I had a ton of fun. Thank you again everyone who visited, the hosts, cheerleaders, everyone.

Here’s a little wrap-up meme for the read-a-thon:

1. Which hour was most daunting for you? 1:00 a.m. Went to bed soon after that time.
2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? I noticed that some readers had graphic novels as their choices. I think that’s a good idea.
3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Not really. It was all good!
4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? I liked the Reader of the Hour. It was fun being one and then going to cheer some others.
5. How many books did you read? 3 1/2
6. What were the names of the books you read? Funeral Music by Morag Joss, The Best Place to Be by Lesley Dormen, Sisters of Misery by Megan Kelley Hall and The Serpent and the Scorpion by Clare Langley-Hawthorne
7. Which book did you enjoy most? I liked them all… Really.
8. Which did you enjoy least? Luckily I didn’t get any books that didn’t interest me. Otherwise I would have put them aside
9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? Wasn’t a cheerleader but am considering being one next time around.
10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? Oh I’m there!

Alright everyone, now I have got to clean the house as my family arrives later today. I’ll save the book reviews for later – probably much later in the week. Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

Ok, I’ve definitely read more than my participation in the last Read-A-Thon but I did take a huge break for dinner so I kind of got behind. Of course now, I’m getting a bit sleepy so don’t know how much longer I’ll last before I have to go to bed. Anyway, I thought I’d do another quick recap of the Read-a-Thon so far:

Running total of pages read since you started: 603
Amount of time spent reading since last update: 2 hours
Running total of time spent reading since you started: 9 hours

Alright, I’m going to continue reading but I may not be doing another recap until the final one. So good luck everyone and big thank you to all the cheerleaders!
