New Books

I’ve gotten a couple of new ARCs recently and I think I really lucked out with these as they sound very interesting to me.

The first one is I’m Perfect, You’re Doomed by Kyria Abrahams. This is a coming-of-age memoir of a girl growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness. I’m not much of a memoir reader but this sounds like it could be interesting.

The other book is from the imprint Serpent’s Tail. I’ve read a couple of books from this publisher and have really enjoyed them so hopefully this is also a good book. The Good Plain Cook by Bethan Roberts is the story of a young woman who answers an advertisement for a good plain cook and ends up getting more than she bargained for.

My other book is The Romantics by Galt Niederhoffer. This book has such a lovely cover and promises to be a captivating story of two friends, one about to be married, and what happens on the days leading up to the wedding.

If this wasn’t enough, to tempt me further I’ve received the latest catalog from Hesperus Press. Unfortunately their web site is under construction so I couldn’t find more info but it looks like they’ve got a list of world literature that they are about to launch August 2009.

So much to look forward to. How about you? Got any new ARCs you are excited about?

Challenge Update

So I seem to be making a bit of progress on my reading challenges lately. Good thing as I am sure I’ll find other challenges to join later – heh. Let me tell you about the books I’ve read:

sightsunseen.jpg speak1.jpg brokenforyou.jpg

For the Southern Reading Challenge I read Sights Unseen by Kaye Gibbons. This novel deals with a young girl growing up with a manic depressive mother. I really liked this book. It was such a fast read because I couldn’t wait to see what her mother would do next and it was heartbreaking to see a family love one of their members and not know what to do for them.

Next up are two books I read for Dewey’s Reading Challenge. The first one is Speak by Laurie Halse Andersen which I practically finished in one sitting. What a wonderful young adult novel. If you haven’t read it go read it soon. I know I can’t wait to read more by her.

The other book I read was Broken For You by Stephanie Kallos. I liked this story until I got towards the end. Then it got a little bit too contrived for me. I believe she has a new book out so hopefully one day I’ll check it out and maybe I’ll like it better.

For more on all the books, click on the titles for my reviews.

Anyway, I’m in the middle of another book for a reading challenge and I’ve got a couple of others lined up. I’m so excited as some of these are books I’ve had on my shelves for a long time and these challenges are prompting me to get to them.

Watching Emma

I’ve been spending some time with my mom this weekend so we’ve been having a bit of a movie and t.v. marathon and have watched some Cadfael, a couple of novelas, a great Golden Age Mexican film and Emma.

emma.jpg How I loved this movie. Now, I have a bad memory and it’s been a while since I read Emma, but I found this to be a great adaptation of the book. I thought Kate Beckinsale was a very believable as Emma, who was intelligent, graceful, stubborn and of course a bit misguided when it came to all her matchmaking.

Some of my favorite scenes were the ones where she has her little daydreams. I don’t remember those being part of the book at all but they worked well for me. And, there is a scene where Mr. Elton tells Emma that he was encouraged by her attention and the look on her face as she realizes where the conversation is headed is just priceless.

Of course the big moment for me was really at the picnic where Mr. Knightley confronts Emma on her behavior toward Miss Bates. I know Emma has a lot to learn but right there I think she finally got it. She finally realized that her actions could really hurt people.

So, this was a delightful movie with what I thought was a great cast. Some of my favorite characters were Mr. Knightley (of course), Harriet Smith, Mr. Woodhouse, Mrs. Elton and even Frank Churchill. So one down for my Everything Austen challenge. I think my mom and I may watch Pride & Prejudice too so I’ll let you know.

Now, I’ve not seen the Gwenyth Paltrow version but what do you think? Have you seen both and which was your favorite?
