I’ve gotten a couple of new ARCs recently and I think I really lucked out with these as they sound very interesting to me.
The first one is I’m Perfect, You’re Doomed by Kyria Abrahams. This is a coming-of-age memoir of a girl growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness. I’m not much of a memoir reader but this sounds like it could be interesting.
The other book is from the imprint Serpent’s Tail. I’ve read a couple of books from this publisher and have really enjoyed them so hopefully this is also a good book. The Good Plain Cook by Bethan Roberts is the story of a young woman who answers an advertisement for a good plain cook and ends up getting more than she bargained for.
My other book is The Romantics by Galt Niederhoffer. This book has such a lovely cover and promises to be a captivating story of two friends, one about to be married, and what happens on the days leading up to the wedding.
If this wasn’t enough, to tempt me further I’ve received the latest catalog from Hesperus Press. Unfortunately their web site is under construction so I couldn’t find more info but it looks like they’ve got a list of world literature that they are about to launch August 2009.
So much to look forward to. How about you? Got any new ARCs you are excited about?
Ooh, I’ve The Good Plain Cook in my pile! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this one!
Enjoy your books! 🙂
Who would trust an advert asking for a “plain good cook”??? That is hilarious!
I’ve got the Hesperus Press catalog too. Darn them for having so many books that look so good! My husband just made a great score by acquiring an ARC of Audrey Niffenegger’s new book. I am salivating over it!
The Good Plain Cook sounds good!
I have recieved Margaret Atwood’s new book as an ARC! To say I was thrilled would be an understatement. Browsing through it, it does seem, well, confusing. I think I’ll be reading it soon.
I have been rejecting ARCs recently. I want to reduce my TBR and not get any new books during Hurricane Season.
I also got the Hesperus Catalog. what a temptation.
And here’s another one that I read about in Mookse’s blog: http://www.archipelagobooks.org/
Plus – A Work in Progress has reported the Book Depository now has a US distribution point. Free shipping.
Iliana….I just love that word, captivating!
I think the book about the Jehovah’s Witness theme will be great.
I recently received the new Margaret Atwood The Year of the Flood. I also received A Separate Country by Robert Hicks. I’m excited about both, especially the Atwood.
What I received that I read yesterday was a fun fantasy book for young kids upper middle to middle called Hootcat Hill by Lucy Coats. It has all the elements of creative fantasy…maidens, magic, dwarfs, evil, good, a dragon, and the need to save the village from the evil Fey Folk.
Take care…enjoy your books.
I’m not much of a memoir reader either, but the Jehovah’s witness aspect has me intrigued.
Melody – It sounds good doesn’t it? I love odd characters and I get the feeling there will be some of those in this book 🙂
Sandy – haha.. So true right?
Stefanie – Oh you must steal that book from Mr. Bookman! I want one of everything from the Hesperus Press catalog. So unfair of them 🙂
Tara – No way! Oh I’m a bit jealous 🙂 I hope you enjoy the Atwood and I’ll definitely be on the look out for your review. She’s wonderful isn’t she?
Isabel – I haven’t been accepting ARCs either – these just appeared. Which is nice of course and I will get to them but at least I don’t feel as much pressure as when I request them. I have seen the Archipelago Books site. So many temptations! And, yes, I did see that on Danielle’s blog. Must. Not. Buy. Right. Now! haha
Wisteria – I like it too 🙂 Ok, so I’m jealous of you and Tara for having received the new Atwood! haha… Enjoy your books. You’ve got some good ones!
Nicole – I know, that’s the reason that one sounds interesting to me too. I saw a couple of reviews that weren’t too glowing but I’ll still give it a go.
They all sound great! I love memoirs. I think it’s because I like reading about different experiences through the eyes of those who lived them. I’m not, however, a fan of biographies because you don’t get quite the viewpoint, you know? That was a tangent. I know they’re not all memoirs.
Enjoy your new books!
Hello all,
Thanks for all the kind comments! Yes, we’re broadening our horizons and stretching out into literature from further afield. In addition to our English, French, Russian, German, Italian, Spanish and Hungarian titles, we’ll also now be publishing in translation from Japanese, Bengali, and Spanish again – but this time from the literary hub of Argentina. Inaugural titles to mark this expansion are:
Rabindranath Tagore, Boyhood Days – a memoir of the Nobel laureate’s childhood, with a foreword by another Nobel winner, Amartya Sen.
Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, The Forest Woman – a beguiling tale of tantric ritual set on Bengal’s tiger coast, dating from the nineteenth century and based in part on The Tempest.
Eduardo Belgrano Rawson, Washing Dishes in Hotel Paradise – contemporary short fiction collection from a rising star of Latin American literature.
Kanoko Okamoto, A Riot of Goldfish – two novellas by an early twentieth-century star of Japanese fiction, exploring the twin notions of obsession and desire.
With lots more to come in future lists! Hope you all like the new series design too…
ER, Hesperus
looks like you got some great arcs to read. Have fun.
These look good. I have not gotten an ARC before. Maybe if I acutually posted something on my blog that would happen 🙂
Bookfool, aka Nancy – I agree, memoirs are easier to read for me than biographies. Unfortunately I feel like memoirs are always so sad that I don’t read too many of them.
Kailana – I will. Now I just need to find more time!
ER, Hesperus – Thank you so much for stopping in to give us more info on the upcoming books. I think it’s safe to say we all love your books and you tempt us with your catalog so best wishes on the future lists. We’ll be on the look out for those!
Serena (Savvy Verse & Wit) – I do! They all sound so good don’t they.
Nancy – Hee,hee…. Just start posting more about books and I bet they come to you quick!
those do sound like some good ARC’s 🙂 happy reading.
The Romantics sounds good.
Oh I know what you mean about the Hesperus Press catalog, mine arrived a couple of days ago! I’m so excited to see that they’re starting to publish more international literature. A Riot of Goldfish went straight onto my wishlist. Now I just have to wait until it comes out at the end of August. 😛
