Just One Book

You know, I typically have a couple of books going on but lately it’s just one and for some reason it’s going very slowly. I guess I’ve just been a bit overwhelmed with some other things.

sadtruthWhat book am I reading? The Sad Truth About Happiness by Anne Giardini. I love how this book started. It’s about a young woman who seems to have everything going on right in her life until she takes a magazine quiz and it predicts that she’ll die quite soon. In order to change the outcome she has to find happiness. Oh so easy, right?

So the beginning of the novel was promising but somewhere in the middle there’s a big event that causes me to want to shake my head at the main character. What was she thinking? And, why this turn of events? I am getting very close to the end, may even finish it tonight, so I don’t think the book will get back to its initial premise which for me was how one person goes about finding happiness, exploring what happiness means and all that.

Not a bad read but hasn’t lived up to my expectations so far. Although maybe I should hold off until the end to make a definite decision. If you’ve read this, what did you think?

Anyway, I’m already wondering what to read next. I don’t know if I’m in the mood for a mystery or another women’s fiction type novel. Hmm, maybe I should catch up on some of my reading challenges. Oh goodness, if you’ve got a great read to recommend let me know. I seem to be in one of those rare moments where I can’t seem to figure out which book next!

Linky

I hope you guys have been having a great start to the week. I’m still working away in the Studio and just taking care of a bunch of other little things but I wanted to pop in and share some links that I think are just too cool.

Have you heard of Lit Drift? It’s a blog, resource, and community dedicated to the art & craft of storytelling in the 21st century. There is a featured story every day, a daily prompt to get your creativity going and even free books on Friday! Yea, I’ll be checking that out too. It looks fun so check it out.

For you magazine junkies out there, there is a wonderful service called STACK, which is a unique service that brings together the best independent English language magazines from around the world and delivers them direct to your home. I would love to see some of these magazines.

Finally, you’ve heard of money growing on trees right? Well, for us bookworms we’d probably be just as happy with books growing on trees so look at this cute tree bookshelf and imagine that in your library.

Enjoy the links and more book talk soon!

Books On My Radar

Remember I said I was going to the bookstore last week? I did go and while I did spend a bit of time in the cafe, checking out magazines and such I also spent some time among the stacks and added a bunch of books to my wish list.

Here are the books that caught my attention:

  • The Palace of Strange Girls by Sallie Day. “Blackpool, England, 1959. The Singleton family is on holiday. For seven-year-old Beth, just out of the hospital, this means struggling to fill in her ‘I-Spy’ book and avoiding her mother Ruth’s eagle-eyed supervision.” – I like the sound of this one and I really like the title too.
  • East Hope by Katharine Davis.
  • The Hidden by Tobias Hill. “Ancient and modern Greece meet in this ambitious, slow-paced story of an archaeological dig whose members have a hidden agenda.” Love the cover of this book.
  • Ground Up by Michael Idov. “Light streams through the windows as the espresso machine roars; a gorgeous, rich scent fills the air; and witty conversation unspools over the porcelain cups. That’s the café dream. Mark and Nina are about to experience the reality.” This sounds fun.
  • Nada by Carmen Laforet. “A modern Spanish classic, first published sixty years ago and translated into eighteen languages, now available in English with a preface by Mario Vargas Llosa. The novel conveys beautifully the spirit of war-torn, brutalized Barcelona.”
  • The Book of Illumination by Mary Ann Winkowski. A novel about ghosts and a bookbinder? Oh you bet I’m putting this one on my list!
  • Friendly Fire by Alaa Al Aswany. A novella and short stories featuring modern life in Egypt. I read his first book, The Yacoubian Building, a few years ago and really enjoyed it so I would like to read this one.

If you’ve read any of these let me know!

And, now I’m ready for the weekend. Lots of stuff going on at the Studio lately so that’s why I’ve been a bit absent from the blog and blogosphere but hope to catch up more next week. You guys have a wonderful weekend!
