Once Upon A Time

Once upon a time there was a Bookgirl who had a lot of energy. Right now, I’m still looking for her but slowly but surely she’s getting better and hopefully will be back to blogging with more frequency and visiting with blog friends soon. In the meantime, let’s talk about Carl V.’s great reading challenge!

2010out4200.jpgI love the Once Upon A Time Challenge and have participated each year. I can’t remember if I’ve ever completed it but thanks to this challenge I discovered a new genre of books I used to not read. So of course I’m participating again but this time I’m going to take the first option which is The Journey. I like that I don’t have to commit to a set number of books.

That said, I’ve skimmed my shelves to see what could fit in this challenge and I’ve found a few books which would be perfect. I love making book lists so here is my list of potential reads. Let me know what you think of my choices and if there’s one I should pick up first!

Oh and I just got some coupons for Half Price Books so I think I need to go visit soon and who knows, I may find other books to add to my list of potentials. Anyway, off to finish up a mystery set in Iceland.

Books, Books, Books

I’ve recently received quite a few ARCs and thought I’d tell you about those. I find that I tend to go through cycles when it comes to ARCs. Sometimes I get overwhelmed and don’t want to accept any and then there are times when I want them all. Ah well, that’s a nice problem to have isn’t it? hee.

So here are the latest books. Let me know if you’ve got these on your wish list.

What about you? Gotten some good stuff lately?

An Outing

I’ve been homebound for two weeks, which has been great for my reading and recovery, but not so great for my cabin fever. I was definitely ready to venture out and in true Bookgirl fashion my first outing yesterday was to the bookstore for book group. It was so nice to hang out with friends, books and a cafe mocha.

We met to discuss Wolves Eat Dogs by Martin Cruz Smith which follows investigator Arkady Renko as he tries to uncover who killed a successful businessman. His superiors claim it was suicide but lots of signs point to foul play. I hadn’t read anything by this author before and while I thought the mystery was a bit anti-climatic, I have to say I was really drawn into the story of The Zone, the radioactive wasteland surrounding Cheronbyl.

I hadn’t really thought much about what happened to the land since the disaster. I just assumed it was a barren wasteland but through reading the book and of course discussing with the members I’ve learned that all kind of wildlife live there now and it’s actually considered a wildlife sanctuary. Can you believe that?

Anyway, a great evening. Next month we’ll be discussing The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny which I’m very excited about as that’s a series I really enjoy. In the meantime, I did start a new mystery this morning, Pretty In Ink by Karen E. Olson. I’ll tell you more about it soon.
