Review: The Brutal Telling

brutaltelling.jpgOlivier Brulé lowered his gaze, no longer able to look into the troubled, lunatic eyes across from him. He’d lived with this story for so long, and kept telling himself it wasn’t real. It was a myth, a story told and repeated and embellished over and over and over. Around fires just like theirs.

Chaos and murder come to the village of Three Pines once more in The Brutal Telling, the fifth installment of the Chief Inspector Gamache series. All the villagers are stunned when a body of an unknown man is found inside the popular bistro owned by Gabriel and Olivier.

Suspicions and accusations run high and some want to cast blame on the newcomers to the village who are opening a spa and hotel, but Gamache is wondering what exactly Olivier did to earn so much hate. As in all previous books, I find that author Penny does a wonderful job of presenting flawed characters who you can still like but more importantly raising the question of just how much you can truly know another person.

Aside from the mystery the familiar cast is back and their problems or lives continue to expand. One of my favorite character, Clara, an artist who is finally getting her own show, will face a difficult task: speak her mind and ruin her chances of success or keep the peace and going forward with the show.

I’ve been a fan of this series because of the descriptive writing and unique setting but this book didn’t live up to my expectations. I’ve always felt that this is a cozy with a bit more of an edge but now I felt that some of the characters were simply too mean. There is a lot of focus on some elements that in the end you wonder what the point of those were aside from providing too many red herrings, and the worst part is that the resolution of the mystery was immensely anti-climatic.

Perhaps if this had been my first book I’d read I wouldn’t judge it as harshly but I’ve come to expect a lot in this series and I didn’t enjoy this one. Would I read another? Well, as I said, it has been a favorite so yes I would read another but I don’t think I’ll be rushing to get it.

Oh and I know I mentioned that I read this for a book group discussion. In my book group we give books a rating from either 1 -5, with 5 being excellent. This book got a 3.

Observation

dparker.jpgApril is going by fast and I’ve hardly posted any poems or written about National Poetry Month but I have been reading quite a bit of poetry actually. My mom and I have been sharing our thoughts on some Emily Dickinson poems. It’s wonderful to read the same poem and discuss it with someone to see what they got out of it don’t you think?

Anyway, the poem I want to share with you today though is Observation by Dorothy Parker from the collection Poems of New York. I’ve not read this one before but oh I love it. I think I need to print this out and put it on my inspiration board.

If I don’t drive around the park,
I’m pretty sure to make my mark.
If I’m in bed each night by ten,
I may get back my looks again,
If I abstain from fun and such,
I’ll probably amount to much,
But I shall stay the way I am,
Because I do not give a damn.

So, how about you? Found any new poems to love this month?

This & That

Well, so much for my weekend plans of doing a lot of reading and catching up on book reviews but I had a good weekend anyway so that’s what counts. We went to the bookstore for a bit on Sunday, I had a yummy veggie burger from Central Market and I took naps. Good stuff.

I got caught up most weekend trying to read The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny. I have to finish that up for my mystery book group discussion on Tuesday and I know I’ve raved about this series in the past but this book is not doing it for me. I’ll save my comments for when I’m done but overall I just feel like there’s been a turning point here and not sure how I feel about it.

I’ve also been reading Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen and that has been a fun, frothy read. I should finish that one very soon.

I was also planning to go to the library but ended up just stopping in to return some books but hopefully next weekend some holds should come in and I can go grab those. I am waiting for Bad Blood by Lorna Sage which is the next Slaves of Golconda read. Gosh, I’ve had a bad run with the Slaves books this year so hopefully this one will break the cycle of unfinished books.

Off to finish my mystery.
