Nope, I haven’t Read That

I really enjoyed Stefanie‘s recent post on “Books Everyone has Read But Me” that I had to borrow the idea and post my own. Isn’t it funny how there are books you feel as if everyone has read but you? You wonder why you missed them. Was it time, just not interested or what? So here are some of the books I haven’t gotten around to:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. If this book had come out now I probably would have thought about reading it but it came out before I started reading YA books and now as I’ve seen the movies and such I just can’t imagine reading it.
  • The Scarlet Letter. It seems like this is a staple of every high school reading list but don’t know why my school didn’t assign this one. For what it’s worth, I would like to read it one day.
  • Eat, Pray Love. Remember when this came out and it was all over the blogosphere, on Oprah, and on every bookshelf at every store? Well, I did want to read it at the time but then all the buzz wore me out. I think I probably would enjoy it as I love travelogues but I’m in no rush to read it. I’ll probably end up seeing the movie first. Shh, I didn’t just admit that!
  • The God of Small Things. Actually I did try reading this book but gave up early, early on. What do you think? Should I give it another go one of these days?
  • Smilla’s Sense of Snow. It seems that a lot of mystery fans have read this one but I never got around to it. I think it was before I started reading a lot more mysteries and crime thrillers.
  • The Alchemist. I think this is one of those either you love it or hate it sort of books. I’ve read another Coehlo book which I liked a lot so I’d give this one a try.
  • Pride and Prejudice. I know, how can I not have read this book. I’ve only read three of Austen’s novels and I’m saving this one for last. Don’t know why. I mean, maybe another of her books will be my favorite.
  • Chicken Soup for the Soul. I’ve not read any of these books and probably won’t. I have my own comfort reads I turn to when I need some warm fuzzies.

You know, I’m sure there are many others I can’t think of right now and I may have to do a Round 2 of this list. Now, I’ve got to get going to my yoga nidra class.

Recap

We had a very nice and fun weekend. It started off with going to BookPeople on Friday to see Lev Grossman talk about his new book The Magicians. I remember getting an ARC for this book a while back and thinking it sounded fun and after hearing him talk about the book I am even more intrested in it. Granted, I have a bunch of other “obligation” reads that I need to get through this month but I really want to read it. Oh and he even had these gorgeous, colorful maps to hand out of Fillory, the setting of The Magicians.

The rest of the weekend was a blur of yoga, biking, and bookbinding. I think I need another couple of free days to catch up on everything else I didn’t get to do. How about you?

As far as reading, I did get to read the latest issue of Bitch Magazine. You have to check it out to see the blurb on Persephone Books. Yay, more press for Persephone. And, there was a really interesting article on Priv Lit. I’d never heard of that before but I can see how that has become a trend. You can check out the article online. I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you are thinking of joining the Slaves of Golconda for our next book discussion, it’s going to be Manservant and Maidservant by Ivy Compton-Burnet.

Finally, my current book is a strange read. I think it’s because I just recently finished another Swedish thriller and this one, The Fire Engine that Disappeared, also has a lot of descriptions that are very negative towards women. I think after this one my next read has to be quite different.

Alright, now I do have to go finish that book. So I hope you had a great weekend and have been reading something good.

Misc.

I have a few things to share:

First, the winner of Jeanine Cummins novel, The Outside Boy is Isabel (thanks to Random.org). Thank you to Jeanine for the guest post and to everyone who entered the giveaway. I hope to have a few more this summer so stay tuned.

I just posted the selections up for vote for the next Slaves of Golconda book discussion so take a look. Our next book selection will be a classic! Yes, because I have fallen behind on my goal to read more classics I’m making the Slaves read one with me. One of the choices is by an author we’ve previously read, H.G. Wells, but I still think of The Island of Dr. Moreau and get chills. That was such a great book. So hope you’ll think about joining us.

I finally finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest this afternoon. I was a bit underwhelmed by this book. The one character I love most is almost in the margins. There’s a romance angle I didn’t like, a lot of political stuff that wasn’t very exciting to read about and worst of all I didn’t feel the same page-turning suspense I felt with the other two books. Ah well, it was a good trilogy but I think my expectations were way too high for this one.

What else, oh yes, I saw this delightful bookmark. Isn’t it cute? I think I need to print a bunch of these and have them on hand.

I think that’s about it. Now to get my new book and go curl up in bed. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!
