Poetry For Breakfast

On my commute this morning I was listening to NPR, although I admit I wasn’t paying attention too much as I was mentally going through all the things I needed to get done in the morning, but while sort of listening to the story about Sen. Byrd what captured my attention was at the end of the piece they closed off with a reading of “Crossing the Bar” by Alfred Tennyson.

I hadn’t heard the poem before so immediately I put aside other thoughts and just focused on the words and meaning. When I parked and turned off the radio I just thought what a great way to start off the morning, with poetry. Too often mornings for me are about rushing around (I’m so not a morning person) but today my morning was more like my weekends, more about the moment and thinking of all the possibilities that exist.

So this afternoon instead of writing reviews, answering emails, doing chores or even reading my current read, I spent my afternoon with poems. I read poems online and from one book and it was great.

I’ll share one poem I really enjoyed today. Hope it helps you start your day off right.

Color by Christina Rosetti

What is pink? a rose is pink
By a fountain’s brink.
What is red? a poppy’s red
In its barley bed.
What is blue? the sky is blue
Where the clouds float thro’.
What is white? a swan is white
Sailing in the light.
What is yellow? pears are yellow,
Rich and ripe and mellow.
What is green? the grass is green,
With small flowers between.
What is violet? clouds are violet
In the summer twilight.
What is orange? Why, an orange,
Just an orange!

You Rock!

Thank you dear blog friends for indulging me and telling me about your favorite reads so far this year. Some books are on my list, some I’ve already read and some are new to me. I love that. I loved hearing from new blog friends too and I really did mean to do a bit of blog hopping this weekend but you know how it goes. So, I will try to catch up with everyone soon.

Anyway, now for my giveaway. Thanks to Random.org the journals go to Sandy, Nymeth and Cipriano! I wish I had more journals to giveaway but I’m sure I’ll find a way to have another giveaway later in the year. I do have a book giveaway coming up at the end of the week though so stay tuned.

So how was your weekend? Mine was really good. I did a bit of book shopping (I’ll tell you about my new books in another post), did yoga and finished A Cottage by the Sea by Ciji Ware, review coming soon. Oh and I treated myself to a wonderful yoga mat. I don’t know why it took me so long to upgrade my mat. I’ve been practicing for years on a standard mat but I finally invested in this wonderfully, supportive mat (I got the blue one).

Anyway, now it’s time for me to wind down and go back to my current read, Broken Glass Park by Alina Bronsky which is so good. I can’t wait to tell you more about it.

Bloggiversary

My blog is a little older now, 6 years! These posts are always the hardest ones for me to write because although it is a celebration of how many years I’ve kept this going, it is also a celebration of my friends and readers who make this so much fun for me and how do you get that across?

I enjoy sharing with you my life with books and I love to read your comments and emails. I cannot tell you how many times I’ll share some blogging anecdote with my husband and it’ll just remind me how much I’ve come to rely on this community for everything; from book recommendations and general book lust, to support when going through life’s less than stellar moments and for laughs and hugs because they make the world better. So, thank you guys!

Now, as it’s become a tradition I’ve got three handmade journals to giveaway to celebrate. If you’ll leave me a comment with your favorite read of the year so far that would be wonderful. I just want to see if I’m missing out on some great reads.

I’m going to take a few days off from my blog to enjoy some extra time visiting bookstores and reading but I promise to come back with stories of books found. Wishing you a great weekend and I’ll see you in the blogosphere!

Smiles,
iliana
