Magazine Reading

I didn’t catch up much with my book reading this weekend, in part because I had to go to the office all of Sunday, but I also indulged in a lot of magazine reading. There are so many magazines I enjoy but this weekend I focused on these three:

bookmarks.jpgBookmarks Magazine (pic from last issue). By the time the magazine hits the stands I’ve usually heard a lot about the new books via book blogs and other sources but I still find more titles to add to my growing list of must-reads.

In this issue I saw a review for Embassytown by China Mieville that intrigued me. My attention was caught by the cover of The Snowman by Jo Nesbo, which of course reminds me I still need to try his books, and finally I added the Japanese bestseller The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino to my list.

cps.jpgClothPaperScissors. This year has not been a very good one for me crafty-wise but that doesn’t mean I don’t look for craft magazines and books in hopes of finding inspiration and motivation. I typically skip all portions on sewing as I don’t sew but this magazine has a bit of everything for the crafter. In this issue I found reviews/ads for several books I want to look into, in particular, Drawn In by Julia Rothman. There was also a good tutorial on the basics of Copic markers. I remember these being the all the rage at Journalfest a couple of years ago but I didn’t really get to play with them then. Seeing this tutorial makes me want to try them. Finally there was an ad for a creative retreat at Idyllwildarts. Oh I how I wish I was going. I think I need to find a retreat this year before I lose my creative spark!

artfulblogging.jpgArtful Blogging. With so many book blogs that I read you’d think I’d be blogged out but every once in a while I venture to other blogs. Gasp!  I love to read blogs by photographers, artists and other crafters. I don’t follow many regularly but there are a few that I’ve been reading for years and it’s just inspiring to see how these artists and crafters are making their artistic dreams come true.

So there you have it, those are some of my latest magazine reads. How about you, have you found read any good magazines lately? What are some of your favorites?

A List

The weekend is almost here and I have a long list of things I want to do. Not sure how much will get done as I’ve got some work to do but here’s what’s on my list.

  • Gentle yoga class
  • Cheesecake with friends. I’m thinking the Chocolate Raspberry Truffle sounds good don’t you think?
  • Catch up on book reviews.
  • Take my mom to the library (I hope I’ll have some willpower and not check out any books).
  • Read! Well, I know read is a given but I hope I can devote a bit more time to reading than I’ve been able to this week.

For all of you mom’s out there have a wonderful Mother’s Day! Enjoy your weekend everyone and more book talk soon.

Currently Reading

I’ve still got my books in translation on the nightstand but you know how it is, the lure of a new book to start is sometimes a powerful thing indeed.

murderersdaughters.jpgAnd, so I couldn’t resist starting The Murderer’s Daughter by Randy Susan Meyers.

As the title says, the story is about two sisters who will live with the aftermath of the death of their mother. Their mother and father were having more and more problems and one day in a drunken rage their father kills their mother and leaves the two girls essentially without their parents.

I’m more than half way through the book and so I’ve seen the daughters go from little girls to teenagers and now adults. How does one make a life after a tragedy like that? Can you imagine a family so fractured by something like this? I think the author creates believable characters and circumstances and makes this one very engaging read.

In the wings though I have another book waiting for me and one I probably need ot start soon so I can be prepared for my mystery book group discussion especially as I’m leading that disucssion.

beautifulplacetodie.jpgA Beautiful Place to Die by Malla Nunn is set in Jacob’s Rest, a tiny town on the border between South Africa and Mozambiqque. It is 1952, and new apartheid laws have recently gone into effect. When an Afrikaner police officer is murdered, the powerful police Security Branch, dedicated to flushing out black communist radicals, prempts Detective Emmanuel Cooper’s investigation.

The second book in the series just came out last month so I hope this will turn out to be a great read and it’s always good to know there’s another book waiting.

And, now to get back to those books. How about you, started any new books lately?
