I didn’t catch up much with my book reading this weekend, in part because I had to go to the office all of Sunday, but I also indulged in a lot of magazine reading. There are so many magazines I enjoy but this weekend I focused on these three:
Bookmarks Magazine (pic from last issue). By the time the magazine hits the stands I’ve usually heard a lot about the new books via book blogs and other sources but I still find more titles to add to my growing list of must-reads.
In this issue I saw a review for Embassytown by China Mieville that intrigued me. My attention was caught by the cover of The Snowman by Jo Nesbo, which of course reminds me I still need to try his books, and finally I added the Japanese bestseller The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino to my list.
ClothPaperScissors. This year has not been a very good one for me crafty-wise but that doesn’t mean I don’t look for craft magazines and books in hopes of finding inspiration and motivation. I typically skip all portions on sewing as I don’t sew but this magazine has a bit of everything for the crafter. In this issue I found reviews/ads for several books I want to look into, in particular, Drawn In by Julia Rothman. There was also a good tutorial on the basics of Copic markers. I remember these being the all the rage at Journalfest a couple of years ago but I didn’t really get to play with them then. Seeing this tutorial makes me want to try them. Finally there was an ad for a creative retreat at Idyllwildarts. Oh I how I wish I was going. I think I need to find a retreat this year before I lose my creative spark!
Artful Blogging. With so many book blogs that I read you’d think I’d be blogged out but every once in a while I venture to other blogs. Gasp! I love to read blogs by photographers, artists and other crafters. I don’t follow many regularly but there are a few that I’ve been reading for years and it’s just inspiring to see how these artists and crafters are making their artistic dreams come true.
So there you have it, those are some of my latest magazine reads. How about you, have you found read any good magazines lately? What are some of your favorites?
Gorgeous mags
You get such fabulous magazines where you are. The Bookmarks one looks fabulous and the Artful Blogging one.
I’m not renewing my Cloth Paper Scissors subscription this year. Just received my last copy, but I will renew Art Doll Quarterly subscription. I don’t subscribe to Artful Blogging, but occasionally by a copy and love looking at the beautiful photos. I also enjoy Yoga Journal.
I’d love to go to one of the retreats at IdylwildArts or the John C. Campbell Folk Art school…some day!
Magazines are my weakness. I love Bookmarks, despite the fact that I definitely don’t need an excuse to add anymore books to my TBR pile.
I’ve thought about buying Artful Blogging in the past but I usually pass it up to read Artful Journaling! 🙂 Glad to hear it’s a good magazine. Maybe next time I’ll just buy both.
I love Bookmarks magazine!
I love magazines and will flip through them in the store, buy them and bring them home and then promptly neglect them (in favor of a book)! 🙂
The bookmarks and blogging ones sound good!
Lesley (Lesley’s Book Nook) sent me her copy of The Devotion of Suspect X which I’m really lookinng forward to reading. Perhaps for the Japanese Literature Challenge 5 which starts this June, if not before. Also, I read Nesbo’s the devil’s star which was the first book I’ve read of his. I liked it better than The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but of course I like cleaning the bathroom better than that book. We’ll have to see what The Snowman is all about.
