This & That

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. Mine was quite good as I went to yoga classes, spent time with my mom and finished a book. Love it when I spend a whole afternoon just reading.

Now to announce the winner of Alice Bliss…. Thanks to Random.org, the winner is Katherine A. I hope you’ll enjoy the book! Stay tuned for another giveaway I’ll be having at the end of the week.

Also, thank you to all of you who left me comments on my previous post regarding my bookish pet peeve. I really enjoyed hearing from those of you who’ve worked in libraries and could give me some background on all those tags and all. So of course I was complaining that I couldn’t see the maps but when I was looking at Deborah Crombie’s web site to see which book is next in her series guess what I found? She has a whole section dedicated to the maps that are in her books! Check it out – it’s quite nice.

What book did I finish? Where Memories Lie. I can’t wait to meet up with my book group this week and talk about it. I have a few other books in progress right now but I just got a bunch of new books recently which are really catching my attention but I’ll tell you about those in another post.

Bookish Pet Peeve

I know I’ve mentioned before how much I love seeing maps in books, especially in mystery books. I believe maps were probably  more popular in the golden age of mysteries, so seeing them in books now is always a treat. But you know what I really don’t like?

When it’s a library copy and this happens:

I know the book has to be protected with a book jacket and that has to be firmly put in place but do you see that I can’t make out all of the map. What’s hidden underneath that flap?

Maybe I should check out the back and see if I can make it out right?

I can make a few other things out but what’s this white sticker on there? I guess this means I should get my own copy and enjoy the maps right?

In case you are wondering the book is Where Memories Lie by Deborah Crombie, which is what I’m reading right now.

How about you, got some bookish pet peeves to share?

Book Giveaway: Alice Bliss

alicebliss.jpg“Outside the back window Alice can see the outlines of the garden, some of the furrows visible under the snow, stretching away in long thin rows. She can’t imagine doing the garden without her dad. It’s his thing; she’s always thought of herself as his assistant at best. She can’t imagine doing anything without her dad and she starts to feel like she can’t breathe. And then she looks at him. Just looks at him as he watches th efire with muffin crumbs on his lap.”

Alice Bliss by Laura Harrington

When Alice Bliss learns that her father, Matt, is being deployed to Iraq, she’s heartbroken. Alice idolizes her father, loves working beside him in their garden, accompanying him on the occasional roofing job, playing baseball. When he ships out, Alice is faced with finding a way to fill the emptiness he has left behind.

Doesn’t this sound like a wonderful story about a father and daughter relationship? I feel like I usually read stories about daughters and their mothers so I’m looking forward to reading this book and getting a different perspective.

And guess what? Thanks to the publisher I have one copy to giveaway to a lucky winner. Giveaway is open to all readers and the winner will be announced Monday, June 20. Just leave me a comment and if you like you can tell me what is one book you are looking forward to reading this summer.

In the meantime check out Nicole’s wonderful interview with the author of this novel or check out Laura Harrington’s site for more details on her books.
