This & That

What a crazy, busy week but I’m excited the weekend is here. That means it’s getting closer to our vacation! In the meantime we’ll try to survive the Texas heat. I think this Saturday it’s supposed to cool down to 99 degrees. I think I need more Scandinavian fiction in my current reads to imagine cool days!

I actually did start a couple of new books this week even though I said I wanted to finish up some of my current reads but as much as I like my current reads, they are slow-moving. And, with me being so tired in the evenings I need some fiction that’s a bit more fast-paced. So I added two thrillers to my current reads.

Rage Against the Dying by Becky Masterman. From Publisher’s Weekly: Resist any temptation to bail after the creepy prologue—a sexual predator’s-eye-view of the woman he’s about to attack—because then you’ll miss one of the most memorable FBI agents since Clarice Starling as well as a killer debut thriller.

The 9th Girl by Tami Hoag. From the publisher’s blurb: Kovac had seen more dead bodies than he could count: Men, women, children; victims of shootings, stabbings, strangulations, beatings; fresh corpses and bodies that had been left for days in the trunks of cars in the dead of summer. But he had never seen anything quite like this . . .

I’ll keep you posted on how these go but so far both have started off with some thrilling introductions!

And, before I close this did you see the 50 Sci-fi/Fantasy Novels that everyone should read? I’ve read a few, very few, but I saw some on here that sounded really good and I’ll have to keep in mind for the Once Upon a Time Challenge. Anyway, check it out and tell me what you think.

Alright friends, have a wonderful weekend. My goal is to stay out of the heat as much as possible and read lots!

Top Ten Tuesday

toptentuesday.jpgI wanted to participate in another  Top Ten Tuesday but almost didn’t with this week’s topic. This time around it is Top Ten Books I wish Could Have Had a Sequels. I read a lot of mystery series and one reason for their appeal to me is that I get to revisit with favorite characters so I don’t expect (or even want) my standalone fiction to have sequels but in the spirit of the list I started thinking of this and actually there are some novels where I do wonder what happened to the characters.

So here are 10 books that I wish had a sequel:

  • Eleanor & Park – The book had a great ending but I just really loved these two and want to confirm what my gut feeling was.
  • The Enchanted April –  I want to know if the characters carried the magic that they found in Italy once they returned home.
  • The Unit – Will childless men and women in this dystopian future still be still be sequestered in their final years and contribute themselves to experiments?
  • The Remains of the Day – What did Stevens do with the rest of his days?
  • Loving Pedro Infante – I want to know if Tere and Irma still have a Pedro Infante fan club.
  • High Fidelity – Would love to see what our protagonist thinks about today’s music.
  • Tipping the Velvet – Just because who wouldn’t want to revisit a Sarah Waters character.
  • The Bookshop – I always wondered and hoped that Florence did better for herself at the end of this book.
  • Daisy Fay and the Miracle Man – I want to know if Daisy Fay made it big at the Miss America Pageant.
  • Among Others – I want to see how Mori has grown up and if she continues to love books.

What do you think? Ok, and if there is a sequel to one of these do tell me! I may be out of the loop. Anyway, what are some books you’d like to see a sequel to?

Once again, thanks to The Broke and the Bookish for hosting the Ten Tuesday weekly meme.

Fun Weekend

Not a lot of reading happened this weekend but I have a very good excuse because one of my dear friends was in town and we spent a good part of the weekend catching up, laughing, shopping and even visiting Gruene, Texas.

gurene

Gruene is about 45 minutes from Austin so it’s not far but I’d never been there. We enjoyed shopping at some of the boutiques, had a delicious lunch at the Gruene Door, a snack at the Flour Cupcakery (yum!) and could have continued exploring but with the Texas heat we were worn out soon and headed back to Austin for a movie.

Sunday has been a day of catching up with things around the house and errands but we also managed a quick stop at the bookstore. I was looking for Excellent Women by Barbara Pym and as I expected, I didn’t find it on the shelves at Barnes & Noble but I had a coupon and put that to use on an online order.

I hope you’ve all been having a wonderful weekend. I’m off to try to get some reading done before it’s time for sleep and the work week to begin.
