Book Sale

I almost didn’t make it out to the Half Price Books Spine sale this weekend because we were caught up in gardening adventures. We’ve added more new plants, cleared out some dead stuff and finished setting up rain barrels. Now we’ll wait for the rain.

booksaleSo about the book sale. I saw a lot of books I’ve already read, books that I have waiting on my shelves and lots of bestsellers which are not necessarily my go-to books but of course I found books I had to have.

Isn’t it funny when you go to a book sale and see a book you love and you just want to tell the person next to you to add it to their cart.

I didn’t buy a lot of books but I think I found some great stuff:

  • 22 Britannia Road by Amanda Hodgkinson. I have this in an ebook but I do prefer a paper copy.
  • Love Anthony by Lisa Genova. I loved her book Still Alice so I’m excited I found this one.
  • Bellfield Hall by Anna Dean. I do enjoy historical mysteries.
  • Lie in the Dark by Dan Fesperman. I don’t think I’ve read any books set in Sarajevo so I’m really curious about this one.
  • Random Violence by Jassy Mackenzie. This is another mystery but this one is set in Johannesburg.
  • Dead Like You by Peter James. I’ve been meaning to check out this mystery series.
  • Peony In Love by Lisa see. I’ve read a couple of her books and have really liked them.
  • Juliet by Anne Fortier. Italy, love and a bit of Shakespeare, what’s not to love?

Anyway, I’m looking forward to these. I hadn’t been to a big book sale in quite a while so that was fun. Now to go find some space on the shelves for these.

Hello May

It’s happened again, another month has flown by and more books have been added to my TBR list. So let’s see, April was a much better month than March. I mainly read mysteries and fiction and I finally got through one whole audiobook. One book in translation so that’s always a good thing too.

With regards to my reading challenges, I’m holding steady at one book read for the Vintage Mystery Bingo challenge, one book for the Romance Reading challenge, and one book read for the Postal reading challenge. I do have books in progress for the Back to Classics and Once Upon a Time reading challenges.

There is still a lot of reading ahead for my challenges but no pressure.

Anyway, I think this month is starting off just right as there’s a big Half Price Books clearance event going on in town this weekend. I’ve got my bags ready and I’ll be there. I promise to report back soon. I hope you all have a super weekend!

Poetry Month

Today is the last day of National Poetry Month but that doesn’t mean I won’t be seeking more poetry in my life. I go through phases and there are times when I tend to read more poetry but I can say that I love discovering new poets and collections.

I didn’t get a chance to go to a poetry reading as I had hoped, mainly because I was sick when one of the events I was looking forward to was happening, but hopefully next year I can make it. But, I have been receiving a daily dose of poems thanks to the Knopf Poem-A-Day emails and that means I’ve added some new poems to my poetry journal.

In particular the ones I liked were: “Shine” by Jonathan Galassi which begs to be read out loud, “In praise of joe” by Marge Piercy which is a fun poem in praise of coffee and “Correspondences” by Anne Michaels and Bernice Eisenstein which evokes such a beautiful imagery.

Now here is a snippet from “Reader” by Billy Collins, whose latest book I’m enjoying greatly.

Looker, gazer, skimmer, skipper,
thumb-licking page turner, peruser,
you getting your print-fix for the day,
pencil-chewer, note taker, marginalianist
with your checks and X’s
first-timer or revisiter,
browser, speedster, English major,
flight-ready girl, melancholy boy,
invisible companion, thief, blind date, perfect stranger —

How about you, did you discover new poets/poems this month?
