The House of the Vestals

houseofvestals“It was the Ides of September, and a more beautiful autumn day the gods had never fashioned. The sun shone warmly on the narrow streets and gurgling fountains of Rome.”

The House of the Vestals
By Steven Saylor

This short story collection featuring Gordianus the Finder are meant to fill the void in time between the first and second books featuring the character. Fans of the Roma Sub Rosa series, now up to 15 books, wanted to know what Gordianus did in the interim.

Gordianus is a Finder – Ancient Rome’s equivalent of a private eye. He can find secrets and keep them too. In each of these nine stories he’ll often have help in solving the mysteries from his beautiful wife, Bethesda and/or his adopted son, Eco. His friend Lucius Claudius often makes an appearance and paves the way for Gordianus to meet more influential or richer members of the Roman society.

Some of the stories are humorous and some make you think how wonderful that we no longer live in Roman times. More than the mysteries, what was interesting about this collection was the timeframe. The author doesn’t try to make the give us modern characters set in ancient times and I can appreciate that.

Perhaps the highlight of the stories is the description of festivals, of rituals and other activities that were important in Roman life. One of my favorite stories was “The Disappearance of the Saturnalia Silver” in which the slaves of the households are given a free day and some are even allowed to speak their minds freely. There is a lot of merrymaking and room for mischief of course which is what happens in this story.

While I typically prefer to read mysteries in order I found that these short stories gave me an idea of what to expect from the series as a whole and it’s one I wouldn’t mind revisiting.

Happy Valentine’s Day

vintage-valentine-little-girlHappy Valentine’s day friends! I hope you are having a beautiful start to your Sunday. It’s kind of gray outside here but I was looking at our backyard garden earlier this morning and I see lots of things starting to bloom.

Our mini roses are looking beautiful and some of our plants we put in last Spring look stronger and I can’t wait to see what blooms they’ll have later this year. I’ve been thinking of some extra things to do in our garden so I’ll keep you posted on that. Fairies might be involved!

We didn’t get a chance to go to the bookstore on Friday because I was tired after my long commute and we decided to just stay in and caught up on Grimm. I’m not feeling this show much more but we’ll see what happens.

I hear my husband in the kitchen right now. I think more Cowboy cookies are going to be made. Yay. And, definitely a trip to the bookstore this afternoon. Now that’s my kind of Valentine’s.

I like to think of Valentine’s day as a day to celebrate love & friendship. So happy day to you all and more book talk soon!

Bookish Dreams

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetI dreamt last night that I visited a small town. The streets were lined with cute Victorian homes with porches and as I was walking through I came upon a small bookstore. I wandered in and although I didn’t see too many bookshelves all the books and magazines I saw were new to me. Never before had I seen these covers and titles or leafed through the pages.

As I was finishing going through one magazine I said to myself I need to mention this in my blog and then that’s when I woke up. Is that not funny?

I think it’s a clear sign that I need to go the bookstore this weekend because I have a feeling I will discover a new magazine or great new book. You know what would be a better plan? Go to a new bookstore. We have several indie bookstores here that I haven’t been to yet. Hmm, maybe this is a sign.

The other thing I really need to do this weekend is read! My book group meets on Tuesday and have I started my book? Oh no, of course not.

Anyway, what are your plans this weekend? Whatever you do, I hope you have a fabulous weekend and more book talk soon.
