Teaser Tuesday

Teaser-TuesdaysIt’s been a while since I participated in a Teaser Tuesday and thought it was time. Teaser Tuesday is hosted by MizB of Books and a Beat The rules: grab your current read, open to a random page, and share two (2 or 3) “teaser” sentences from that page while avoiding any spoilers.

This is going to be a teaser for you and me because I haven’t started this book yet. Oh and there’s a giveaway too!

“My name is Leon and my birthday is on the fifth of July, nineteen seventy-one, Your birthday is today. School’s all right but you have to go nearly every day and Miss Sheldon won’t let proper soccer balls in the playground. Nor bikes but I’m too tall for mine anyway; I’ve got two Easter eggs and there’s toys inside on of them. I don’t think you can have chocolate yet. The best program is The Dukes of Hazzard but there are baby programs as well.” pg. 2

And, here’s another from:

“Leon has begun to notice the things that make his mom cry: when Jake makes a lot of noise; when she hasn’t got any money; when she comes back from the phone booth; when Leon asks too many questions; and when she’s staring at Jake.” pg. 13

These teasers are from My Name Is Leon by Kit De Waal. What do you think? I think this could be a great read. So now to the giveaway part. I have an extra ARC to giveaway so if you are interested in this book leave me a comment and let me know and I’ll do a drawing. I’ll announce the winner by Monday.

Month In Review

MonthInReviewI hope you all had a great weekend. We did not make it to the bookstore for our regular date night because my husband was busy with garden work all of Saturday. Instead though we went to a nearby coffeeshop in the afternoon to enjoy a sweet treat and a cappuccino for me and tea for my husband. We had our reading material with us so it was nice to hang out and just make time to read.

Anyway, now it’s time to wrap up another month. While June was a fabulous reading month in the amount of books I read, July was definitely not. Of course I was back from vacation and back to catching up with work, home life, etc. and unfortunately my reading has been slow. I only read three books in July.

It was also all about mysteries. I read The Woman In Blue by Elly Griffiths, Night Life by David C. Taylor and Murder in Morningside Heights by Victoria Thompson. I enjoyed all of these though so even if it wasn’t a month with a lot of books, at least no duds. I do have some other books that are ongoing but I’ll tell you about those in another post.

These books did not meet any of the requirements for my reading challenges so nothing to report on that end. There’s always next month right?

What I’m looking forward to in August though are a couple of book giveaways and an author guest post. What about you, what are you looking forward to in August?

The Perfect Neighbors

perfectneighbors“Drivers Beware! A friendly reminder that school starts today, so please be on the lookout for the students, especially the wee ones… – Remember, a normal speed meets every need! Sincerely, Shannon Dockser, Newport Cove Manager”

The Perfect Neighbors
By Sarah Pekkanen

Welcome to Newport Cove, one of the 20 safest communities in the U.S. as praised by Parenting Magazine. There are fun-filled block parties, beautiful homes and your neighbors are your friends.

Susan, Gigi and Kellie are friends who meet on a regular basis and when they meet a newcomer to the community they quickly embrace her and hope she’ll join them for drinks and friendly gossip. Tessa likes the women but she’s reserved and it’s hard for the women to get to know her.

While Tessa may seem the most remote, as the story develops it is clear that each of the women have struggles in their lives. There’s Gigi whose husband is running for political office and is learning to deal with being in the spotlight. For Susan, it is hard to let go of her ex-husband and meanwhile Kellie is joining the workforce after being a stay-at-home mom and finding it hard to resist a work flirtation.

Still as the women share some of their lives with Tessa, it is clear that what Tessa is trying so hard to keep secret could really rock their community if they knew about it.

I really enjoyed the humor, especially in the listserv digests that open each chapter, and thought that was a nice touch to the story and made me feel like I was part of the community. With regards to the secrets the women keep, although one is supposed to be the shocker I was more intrigued by Susan and Kellie as I felt that their situations just seemed very real. Definitely check this one out if you are looking for an entertaining Summer read.
