Weekend Recap

bookmessI hope you all had a great weekend. I meant to post yesterday but we were watching the Swedish crime drama, Johan Falk,  and the episode was longer than I expected. After that I had to get busy reading Hallowed Bones for book group.

I’m very curious how my book group feels about the book so I’m looking forward to that. There are some things I like about the story but there are a couple of things that annoy me about the main character and being annoyed with the main character is not a good thing. Anyway, I still have about 100 pages to go but I’ll let you know how it turns out.

Other than that our weekend was a blur of errands, laundry and well, I do admit a nap here and there so I can’t complain too much.

I’m going to make this one quick because I really need to get back to my book but hope your week is off to a great start!

Two New Books

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI have quite a few eBooks to tell you about but my Kindle ran out of juice so I’m charging that up. In the meantime I’ll tell you about two new books that arrived in the last couple of weeks.

Only Daughter by Anna Snoekstra. From the back cover: In 2003, sixteen-year-old Rebecca Winter disappeared. She’s been enjoying her summer break but ominous things begin to happen – a presence in her room at night, periods of blackouts, a feeling of being watched. Eleven years later she is replaced. What? I know, this sounds all kinds of twisty and thrilling! I am looking forward to this book.

Mending Fences by Sherryl Woods. From the back cover: For ten years Emily Dobbs and Marcie Carter have been the closest of friends. But when Marcie’s son, now a college freshman sports star, is arrested for date rape, the bond between the families could be shattered forever. Sounds like a good drama.

Have you heard of these or read them? Let me know if you have.

So what is everyone planning for the weekend? I would love to finish one of my current reads I mentioned recently. I’m thinking of taking my book and journal to a cafe for the afternoon this weekend but then I’ve heard of some stuff going on around town that I wouldn’t mind checking out. We’ll see what I end up doing. I hope you have a wonderful weekend and more book talk soon!

Chills & Thrills

ripelevenmainSo I thought I’d do a little update on my R.I.P. Challenge. I absolutely love this time of the year and if you know me, you know that Halloween is my favorite holiday. I love the costumes, candy, scary reads and even scary movies. I’ve already read two of my R.I.P. reads, one short story and even watched a good film for the season.

One of the books I recently finished is Witch by Barbara Michaels. This has an old house, a ghost, a story about a woman accused of being a witch, strange townspeople, you name it. In the story Ellen March finds a wonderful home tucked in the woods. Her family is off to college, working abroad, etc. so she thinks this will be the perfect place to make her own. She is determined to meet the residents of the small town and she’s intrigued by the handsome next door neighbor too. It all sounds wonderful until she sees a ghost in her bedroom.

I enjoyed this one and could just picture myself like our main character, enjoying her old house, surrounded by books and spending the afternoons reading. Of course, a ghost might be an issue. Anyway, if you are a fan of Barbara Michaels I think this is one to add to your collection.

americanscreamNow if you are looking for a good Halloween movie, you’ve got to check out The American Scream. Don’t worry, if you don’t like being scared or gory movies you will be just fine. This is actually a documentary about a community in Massachusetts, who build elaborate Halloween wonderlands every year. They build mazes, turn their homes into haunted houses, they create monsters and even dress up themselves no matter the age. The movie follows three families as they share why they go through all the trouble and what it means to them.

I cannot imagine taking decorating to this extreme but it was definitely fun to watch. I appreciated that the biggest draw for all the participants was the feeling of community they got from doing something like this in their neighborhood. I would love to see these haunts in person that’s for sure.

Let’s see what else I can add to my reading and watch list before the RIP challenge ends. How is your challenge going and do you have any good books/movies to recommend? We’ve already got a couple more scary films in our Netflix queue so let’s see which one we decide on over the weekend.
