This & That

Even though it was a short work week, I am ready for the weekend. It’s always a bit exciting to return to work refreshed after the holiday but then all the items that piled up while on break quickly make you want another holiday. Ha.

So this weekend I need to stop by the library to pick up a couple of holds. I’m going to try and not venture over to the new books shelves but I make no promises.

I can’t wait to watch Sherlock, read my latest issue of Art Journaling magazine and check out the Most Anticipated Books of 2017. Have you seen this list? Oh my, books by J.M. Coetzee, Haruki Murakami, Penelope Lively and many others. Get your pens ready to take note.
Speaking of pens, did I tell you that I have a new Lamy? My husband got me this beautiful new Lamy with a black chromium-plated steel nib, which definitely feels different from my other Lamys when writing. I also have a vibrant blue ink to try out so I think I’ll be spending some time with my journals this weekend.

Hope you have a great weekend! Any big plans?

For My Kindle

Over Christmas and New Year’s my local library was closed for several days and although I have plenty of books on my shelves I went into a panic mode I guess and started requesting more books from NetGalley. You all do this when your library is closed right? Ha.

Anyway, I couldn’t pass up some of the titles I saw either because they were from authors I’ve read before or just books that interested me. So here are some of the books I added to my Kindle:

The Shadow Sister by Lucinda Riley. From the description: Travel through the lush English countryside and explore the magnificent estates of the British aristocracy in this next spellbinding love story in The Seven Sisters series. I have really enjoyed Riley’s books in the past so I’m excited to read this one.

The Executioner Weeps by Frederic Dard. From the description: On a quiet mountain road near Barcelona, a woman steps out in front of a car. When the driver, a well-known artist, stops to some to her aid, he finds she is alive, but without any memory of who she is or where she has come from. I love a good international crime story and looks to be a great thriller.

The Good Daughter by Alexandra Burt. This is the story of a young woman in search of her past, and the mother who will do anything to keep it hidden. Yes, another thriller.

The Dollhouse by Fiona Davis. This book is set in New York City’s glamorous Barbizon Hotel for Women in the 1950s. I have read several good reviews of this book.

The Ripper’s Shadow by Laura Joh Rowland. Here’s another retelling of Jack the Ripper. What drew me to this novel is that the main character is a woman photographer. Plus, I’ve read several of Rowland’s books from her Sano Ichiro series (which is a good one!) so I can’t wait to see how she handles a new era and protagonist.

And, I’m very excited because I’m about to finish one fiction book I was carrying over from 2016  so it’s time to add some fiction and mystery to my reading stacks. What will I choose? Let me know if you’ve already read some of these or what you’ve recently added to your eReader.

Two More

I’m excited to report on two more challenges I’m joining this year as I hope they will help me  reach some of my reading goals.

First is the Poetry Reading Challenge hosted by Serena. I joined this challenge last year and didn’t quite complete my goal but I did read two poetry collections so that is definitely something to be happy about. Like last year’s challenge, there are several levels from which you can choose. I’m going to try and reach the Villanelle level which means reading five or more poetry books.

I’m up for the challenge. I do enjoy poetry a lot and I would love to read more. One thing is that I’d like to discover other poets. For example, Denise Levertov, Jane Hirshfield, Anne Sexton, etc. Another thing I want to commit to with this challenge is to attend at least one poetry reading. We have several poetry readings at local indie bookstores and it’s about time I go visit some of them!

The second is #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks hosted by Andi. The goal, as the challenge states is to read from your own books. The best part of this challenge is that you name the rules.

The reason this challenge really appealed to me is that when I was going through my yearly stats I noticed that only about 12 books came from my shelves (not including Kindle reads). That’s not a lot of books and no wonder my shelves are filled to capacity!

So I think this is a good challenge for me. I don’t know how hard core I can be but certainly I’d like to increase the number of books read from those found on my shelves. So I’m going to strive to at least read 20 books from my shelves.

Thank you Serena and Andi for hosting these challenges. I’m going to enjoy participating!

How about you, are you joining either of these?
