Found

In the process of cleaning my Studio/Library you won’t believe what I found – book lists! These handwritten notes are booklists I’ve put together while on travel. As I’m always visiting bookstores when we travel, I also make it a point to write down titles of books that I want to check out when I get back home.

I know one of these lists is from when we were in Vancouver a couple of years ago. I recognize the hotel notepad I used. The other one is from when we were in Belgium. I remember because I have it on the back of a business card of a calligrapher. We were in Belgium when my husband took a workshop there several years ago. The last one must be from one of our Summer trips to Germany.

Usually when we get back home I try to add these titles to an Amazon wishlist or my library wishlist but I don’t think I’ve added these. I look forward to spending some time going through these and thinking about the books that I thought were interesting at the time. I wonder if they’ll still sound interesting to me now.

For now off to continue reading because I want to finish another book before the month is out. I’ll tell you more about my January reads next time.

Books & Bikes

Utrecht, Summer 2016

Thank goodness for the presentation we went to on Saturday by one of the creators of Pedal South. With so many news coming out that make me think the world is not headed in a good direction, it was so nice to hear about this project. Four friends cycled the Pan American Highway from Alaska to Argentina and even when they found themselves at their most tired or vulnerable they still thought the trip was worthwhile.

Why do this trip? Because they wanted to discover the beauty of the places and their people. They were witnessed great acts of kindness and as Ricardo shared various stories I kept thinking how there is a lot of goodness in this world and we just need to remember that and fight for it.

Now can you imagine cycling that many miles? I think my husband started getting ideas. Haha…

Anyway, I also went to the library to pick up a couple of books that I had on hold. Here are my books:

Glaxo by Hernan Rosino. This is supposed to be a chilling novel of betrayal, romance, and murder, from a major Latin American writer being published in English for the first time. It is set in a derelict town in the Argentine pampa.

A Small Death in the Great Glen by A.D. Scott. In the Highlands of 1950s Scotland, a boy is found dead in a canal lock. Two members of the local newspaper staff set out to investigate the crime.

A Thousand Naked Strangers by Kevin Hazzard. A former paramedic’s poignant and mordantly funny account of a decade spent on Atlanta’s mean streets saving lives and connecting with the drama and occasional beauty that lies inside catastrophe. I wanted a nonfiction read and when I found this I thought it sounded interesting but to be honest I’m not sure if I’m really in the mood for this one now. Have you read it?

Have you checked out any books lately? And, how was your weekend?

Link-O-Rama

I don’t know about you but I think I need a breather from all the news. So in case you wanted some fun distraction how about bookish links? Here are some things I’ve been digging – I hope you will too.

Do you use bookplates? I love the idea of them but I’ve never used them. If you love bookplates or are curious to see more check out some lovely examples of Vintage Bookplates.

I’m not very familiar with Paul Klee’s work but how cool is this, you can now see his personal notebooks. I love seeing the creative process.

Did you know that February is letter writing month? Get some ideas from InCoWriMo 2017 (International Correspondence Writing Month) on how to participate.

If Winter is getting you down and you are thinking of travels, how about a literary vacation? Take the quiz and find out where you should head to. According to the quiz I should head to Scotland. Hmm, funny enough my next mystery book does have a Scottish setting!

And, speaking of mysteries, the Edgar’s have been announced. Have you read any on the list of nominated books? I read Unbecoming last year and thought it was a good read. Not my favorite mystery of the year but still a good one.

Let me know what you are up to this weekend. More book talk soon!
